x3750 M4 - ServeRAID M5110e - no raid 6 no raid 10

2019-08-09, 9:59 AM

Hello,

I have just bought an old x3750 M4 server, Windows server 2016 is working fine.
This will be used as an Hyper-V cluster storage.
This server has 12x 300Gb SAS Drives
I am unable to create any raid 10 or raid 6 array , the only choices I have are RAID1 or RAID0
I thought that maybe the firmware is too old to manage raid 10 or 6 so I have tried to download and install UpdateXpress to upgrade the raid controler firmware without success.
File lnvgy_utl_uxspi_10.6_winsrvr_32-64 won't install (error message follows)

Any chance to have raid 10 with 10 SAS Drives on x3750 M4 server ?

Vincent,

Data protection (PI) was removed on newer version of the FW because some problems were found.

The latest FW on the IBM site is 23.34.0-0023
https://www-945.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/systemx/doSelectFixes?options.selectedFixes=ibm_fw_sraidmr_6gb-23.34.0-0023_linux_32-64&continue=1
A newer version on the Lenovo site: 23.33.0-0044
https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/SERVERS/SYSTEM-X/SYSTEM-X3750-M4/8718/downloads/DS112459
I would update the FW and continue without PI

Data protection is supported by the controller (with your current FW) and it also needs to be supported by drives, or it will not work.

When creating a RAID 10 volume, select two drives [AddtoArray], then [Accept DG], then two more drives [AddtoArray]+[Accept DG], create as many disk groups as you need with two drives each (drives as DG need to be equal) . . . then [Next], on the next Window, select each disk group from the drop down and click [Add to Span] one by one (I think this you screen on your last picture), when they all appear on the right side [Next], on the next screen [Accept] and it may be a few more clicks to confirm . . . done.

When the RAID volume is created, do an init . . . there may be old data on the drives that could confuse the OS later.

Re: x3750 M4 - ServeRAID M5110e - no raid 6 no raid 10

Vincent,

This server has a M5210e RAID controller embedded on the system board that support RAID levels 0,1,5,6,10,50,60; although for some of them (5,50,6,60) you many need a software key upgrade. RAID 10 should not be a problem.

I would verify the drives are connected to this embedded RAID controller and not to another add on PCIe RAID card that may not support all RAID levels.
Also, check the state of the drives, it should be UNCOFIGURED_GOOD and with not foreign configuration, to be available to create a new RAID volume with them; if this server is being repurpose the drives may have steal old configuration data or be on other state that needs to be cleared first.

Hi R8nser and thank you.

Raid controler is ServeRAID M5110e (and no other raid card)

Firmware is 23.12.0-0019

All 12 drives are detected by controler (WebBIOS)

2 drives are RAID 1 (DriveGroup0)

10 drives are unconfigured.

When I create a new virtual disks with 10 drives (DriveGroup1 with disks from slot 6 to 15). WebBIOS is asking me if I really want to disable data protection.

If I say NO, virtual disk selection is reset and I have to select disks again.

If I say YES, it opens "SPAN DEFINITION" menu. Then, I add "Array with free space  (Drive Group1,Hole0,R0,R1,2.723TB) " to Span.

Unfortunately, the interface indicates : Next LD, Possible RAID Levels R0:2.723TB T1:1.361TB

Re: x3750 M4 - ServeRAID M5110e - no raid 6 no raid 10

Hello R8nser,

Thanks for your suggestion, I managed to create a RAID 10 array.

I also tried to update controler firmware using Lenovo file but I had this message :

siMRupdate
Version 1.40 - Release Date 10/31/14

This update is for the following controllers:
- ServeRAID M5115 - ServeRAID M5120 - ServeRAID M5110e for System x3650 M4 - ServeRAID M5110 - Lenovo System Storage Expansion Node
Found 1 ServeRAID M, MR or MegaRAID Controller(s)

Getting configuration for Controller 0. Please wait....

Controller 0 is an unknown type, or is not supported by this update.

No controllers found for BIOS or firmware flash!

The link to IBM update is not working
