Just Received My New T431S - Screen is Abysmal

2013-05-20, 1:37 AM

To any of the Lenovo Staff Members who monitor this forum, please read this carefully...

I just received my new T431S, model number 20AA000SUS.  What I want to know is do your Product Managers or Product Developers use the machine before signing off on the final design?  The reason I ask is because of the following:

THE SCREEN IS A COMPLETE FAILURE!!!

The vertical and horizontal viewing angles are terrible, the brightness is not even close enough to being usable.  When the laptop is sitting on my desk I have to push the screen back another 15 degrees at least (compared to my X1 Carbon) to get a good enough viewing angle to work on Microsoft Word documents.

I just do not understand how you can ship a product that has overall great build quality, good general specifications, but a screen that is simply not usable.  I am really disappointed in Lenovo.  How much harder would is be to source an IPS screen?

Sounds like an AUO manufactured screen. I personally do not like AUO screens because they are not lit evenly from top to bottom, and the native white balance is too blue.  Thje LG and Samsung are more evenly lit and super bright.

Not all AUO screens are bad.

The AUO B156HW01 V.4, FHD, 95% color gamut, used on T/W510/520/530, is awesome.

Anyway, too bad about the T431s -- which is not too surprising, projecting from a few generations of 14" ThinkPads with consistently terrible screens. That's a clear case of being stubborn and ignoring customers' feedback.

No sales for me, at least.

There are a number of products that cannot be bought by what is in print. Anything can be presented as being great. Yet another rock in the fleet of Thinkpads.

Based on long running blogs and message boards, the 14" AUO HD+ is not the best quality LED display out there.  Moreover,  I wouldn't trust AUO, since they were more interested in price fixing for the last five years.  In fact, in Sept 2012, AUO was fined $500 million for violating U.S. Antitrust laws.  The $500 million is the largest U.S. Antitrust fine ever.  AUO's two top executives from their American subsidiary are now in jail as well.  Knowing that, I think I'll stick with my preference for not going with AUO.

Let's clarify one thing.  This is a Lenovo product.  Someone signed off on it.  So if Lenovo wants to use low quality screens, it was a business decision someone made in LENOVO.

The part that frustrates me is that we are never really given a choice in the 14" models.  I would pay EXTRA for a high quality 14" screen ThinkPad.

It's also the reason I am typing this on a Retina MacBook Pro.

hopefully this is the last bad screen ThinkPad, given that more manufacturers are moving to IPS high resolution displays.

I don't believe it at all. High quality notebook displays are available for more than ten years and were standard in IBM 15" T era, don't you remember ? Lenovo is no longer interested in quality, at least optional. That is, every new "ThinkPad" model just confirms that again. Sad. It is a controlled collapse of the ThinkPad brand. Build a generic notebook using cheapest components on the market and put a "ThinkPad" logo on it. Mission complete.

Lenovo product dynamics is driven by the market. So if everyone else is doing it, it will feel compiled to act. Like the FHD IPS on the Helix.

IBM dynamics is driven by its need to monitise its own technology from its vast R&D, and test these technologies in the real world.

No please. Do not confuse different product types. Helix is a completely different kind of product (tablet with detachable keyboard) than regular notebook. The only reason it has IPS display is that there are no other (worse) displays on the market with touch capability. Otherwise I'm sure Lenovo would take it because it is $10 cheaper and would ruin a $2000 product by it again. As it does with T431S.
