T431s touchpad - Is it crap or is it just mine?

2013-06-24, 19:24 PM

I've been trying to use my new T431s for over a week now. For the most part it seems good (I've had over 5 T series).

But the touch pad is driving me NUTS.  At work I have it in a dock.  I have the external keyboard with the Trackpad/touch pad.  And it detects them, but won't work - but I can use a mouse there.

When used as a laptop, I have to wonder if they even tested the trackpad (if mine is working as designed).

1. When I use the track point (the main reason I stay thinkpad) - the buttons are gone and they are intergrated in to the touch pad:

a) The button clicks take 3 to 5 times to take

b) Third buton (scroll) does not work 95% of the time

c) My palm keep tocuhing the pad and bringing up the windows charm, and teh next click (regardless of what I'm clicking on) will bring up the start screen.

when I try to use it as a touch pad:

a) right clicks don't work right - I can hear the click many times beofre the software gives me a click.

b) left clicks are almost impossible - sometimes it takes me 5 tries to get a left click, I have to rub my finger on teh lower edge before I click to get teh left click.

c) 2 finger scroll failes 80% of the time, and if I press to hard, that is when I get the click.

I'm just wondering if everyone has this, or if it's just me, I'll get the trackpad replaced.  I'd be happy to just disable the touch pad, and just use the trackpoint (that is how I alwasy ran my other units) - but I can't even find that.

Actually, I just did a re-format of the whole machine to a native win 8 disk (not the recovery).  I got way more HD space. and the touch pad actually works ok now.  WAY better than it did before.

When you first install, you may want to have a mouse, as without any dirver the touch pad is pretty hard to use.

Then it took about 3 tries to get the driver to load (with system update) - once it did it is work like its supposed to.

I did notice that the Tab under Mouse (in CRTL pannel) looks different - so maybe you just need to force the correct new driver.  Try a full uninstall of the mouse driver then manually install the new one.

It also feels like the fresh install is faster then the lenovo build - I've only loaded the most basic drivers.  Everything seems to work.

Call Support and ask if they have a solution. If they don't, have them replace it.

This is the first review I've seen about the five-point touchpad, and this may or may not be how well the design actually works.

It is not just you, I am having similar problems.  The left, center and right track point mouse buttons that are now integrated into the touchpad do not work at all.  I wonder if Lenovo is providing a new or correct driver for this touchpad.  Without those buttons the track point has lost its functionality.  I am not sure what to do hear as I have downloaded the driver for the touchpad provided by Lenovo.

I also noticed that the touchpad works better by installing windows 8 with microsoft dvd instead of lenovo recovery disks. So it may be a driver problem.

but despite that, the right "tap" still doesnt work here, and the right click needs 4 our 5 tries to take. the scroll button works perfectly tough.

hope new drivers will fix it soon :(

I spent the reset of last night and this AM on the touch pad - works quite good now actually.  And I just got to the office and my external Keyboard with the trackpoint is working now too.

I'm quite happy.

When I get the device settings tab on the mouse properties -

I have version 16.5.0.1  25Mar13

I'd suggest checking that.

Ok - I'm back to sad - After the refresh everything worked good as a laptop, when I put it in the dock the external trackpoint worked.

when I took it back out of the dock the trackpad is now not acting as well, and now my external trackpoint does not work at all.   It's like the driver changed when it found the external keyboard.

Anyone know how to report a bug like this?

The one with built in Trackpad/point.

I just un-installed the mouse driver, re-installed.  and it's working better.

When you go to mouse in ctrl panel, you get a 'thinkpad' TAB - and it allows you to adjust the click area.

I bet when I get in to work in the AM, that will change and go back to a synapics tab, with less options and the internal pad will go back to not working very well.   I'll see in the AM.

There is for sure a bug with the driver - works ok, till I plug in the older trackpad - then it all goes to crap!
