Re: T431s touchpad - Is it crap or is it just mine?

2013-12-10, 7:56 AM

I think I found out how to use it - it is crap, but I use it gentle, not uses "quick clicks" like Your are feeling your way so to say, then it works for me - but I have to learn a user on the other side of my world, to use it, and that is is diffucult to describe!!!

I agree! Worst touchpad I have EVER used. I am so upset with this. Selling my T431s on ebay and buying something else.

I am using Linux and there is no solution :(

The X1 carbon still have the seperate buttons.  Works way better.

I'm also playing with a T440s - seems better.

I'm taking my T430s to have the trackpad replaced.  I'll let you know if it gets better, and I'll also be playing with the 440 more and I'll update how that one is.

I just got the "clickpad" of my T431s replaced. A bit better, but still practically useless. Obviously faulty by design for us trackpoint users. Those people who do not use the trackpoint at all say that the touchpad is almost usable, not good but you can manage with it. Trackpoint users (we have several in our organization) all say that the new "clickpad" just does not work even after replacing them. Apparently the problem is not restricted to individual machines, the whole design seems to be flawed..

All,

We are working on improvements to the touchpad performance.   Please check the support site for the latest updates:

1) Firmware update for the touchpad.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS039494

2) Driver update

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034647

At time of this post, the newest driver was Jan 14th, and is version 17.0.12.60

We have a newer version in final test now and I expect it to release to the web by end of this month.

Please give these a try.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: T431s touchpad - Is it crap or is it just mine?

I've now had 2 pads in my T431s and I've upgraded to a T440s  - I've also used a few other T440s (while setting up for other users).

It is a big flaw in the whole way the 'touchpad' emulated the buttons - specificly the Right button.

On my T440s I have touch pad fully disabled - and the latest drivers and all installed.  I still get about a 15 to 20% failure rate on the right clicks.

With my work, there is a bunch of right clicking in IE (to open a new window) - about 10% of the time I get a left click (main window follows the link) - even tho I an clearly on the top edge of the pad, well to the right, and my finger is still on the stick.

Then about 5% of the time, I get the right click menu, and the left click action (both) so I end up with a new window and the main window has also followed the link.

It's very frustrating.  If the X1 Carbon was dock able I'd switch to that as it still has real buttons (but I have not played with the new version).

As I am pretty sure this is all fixable in software - hopefully the new driver will make quite a difference.  A big part of the thinkpad advantage was the EXTREMLY precise touchstick. With that percission gone now, it really lowers the value of the units.

Lenovo guys - Take note - we are talking about the STICK here, not the PAD - Most die hard users do not use the PAD, we want the percision of the STICK back.

The buttonless touchpad bothered me for almost 2 years. So much so I recently thought about switching to T450s which has a touchpad with buttons. As a last try I bought a T450s touchpad and replaced the T431s touchpad with it. The replacement was a total success! And fairly easy too. 8 screws on the back panel, 4 for the battery, and 5 to release the touchpad. Uninstalled the old driver and I was good to go!
