Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Hello ,

I happen to have two t510s, one with NVIDIA and the other with Intel HD Graphics video controller (both running on Windows 7 x64). I have bought a Displayport to HDMI cable and tested it with both notebooks with a Samsung TV. Video was ok, but audio did not work with the notebook with Intel HD Graphics (i.e. the NVIDIA one had no troubles at all, which implies that the cable is perfect !)

Here are all my failed attempts:

 - updated the Intel HD graphics drivers to the latest available on the Intel website

 - updated the sound driver to the latest available on the lenovo website

 - tried out to see if there is an option to set the playback device to the TV  both with windows sound options in the control panel and Smart Audio

Looking forward to your suggestions :)

Cheers,

Mohamed

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

zimo,

Try updating the T510 (Nvidia) video drive to the latest and see if the audio is still passing through the adapter.

This is to ensure that the DP-> HDMI adapter is compatible with the newer drivers.

HDMI audio setup.

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Hi ExJamJus,

Thank you for your reply.

Perhaps it wasn't very clear, but I DO NOT have a problem with the T510 laptop with the NVidia graphics card.

My problem is with the T510 that has the Intel HD graphics card.

I have already tried updating both graphics cards.

Cheers,

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Mohamed,

If you were to read the link I gave you. Nvidia drivers are able to pass audio from DP to HDMI without any issues however after Nvidia updated the driver, only selected DP->HDMI adapters are able to work properly. Since you mentioned that both graphic cards have been updated I guess your DP->HDMI port is able to pass the audio properly.

In Control Panel -> Sound, is there the TV listed? Compared to the Nvidia one, is it the same?

ExJamJus

I have read the links, however, there is nothing mention about the Intel HD Graphics adapter (it only mentions things about Nvidia).  My T510 with the problem does not have an NVidia graphics controller instead it has an Intel HD Graphics adapter - so I don't think installing the NVidia drivers will work for the intel graphics controller ;) . This is my model number for reference (ThinkPad T510 (4349-3QG))

No it is not the same.  The TV is not listed.

Cheers,

Mohamed

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Yeah I am aware, I am thinking if the Intel GPU drivers are preventing the audio from going through.

Just some back story. A while back T410 with Nvidia are able to bypass audio on DP->HDMI adapter, any adapter will do. However after an driver upgrade, Nvidia decided to code it only to compatible drivers, thus if the adapter is not compatible, the GPU is smart enough to prevent audio from going through but only video is fine. Thus the only workaround is to either get a compatible DP-> HDMI adapter or downgrade the driver.

As for your case is that Nvidia is working fine despite upgrading the driver however the Intel one is not showing TV in the Sound settings.

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Exactly !  :)

I truly believe that the Intel drivers do not pass audio :(

I have also tried yesterday testing it on Suse Linux (12.2), which didn't work as well :(

My only hope now is to find a certain driver version that works , OR wait for Intel to resolve that issue :( :( :(

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

Zimo,

If you were to test the T510 (Nvidia) with Suse, does it work?

Then for T510 (Intel) with Suse, does not work right?

Lets try to narrow to hardware limitation or hardware issue?

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

I didn't try the Nvidia one with Suse ...

But for the Intel one , I can confirm that it doesn't work (given that I performed the latest updates as well).

But I don't think it is a hardware issue . :smileyindifferent: Video is being perfectly displayed ;)

Re: T510 / Displayport to HDMI / Intel HD Graphics

From my experience I would have to agree that the Intel Graphic is graphics only. Nothing to do with sound in that chipset. The sound would have to be controlled by a audio codec and their drivers.

I know from updated and working on my combo graphics that their are sound driver part of the Nvidia and Optimus packages. So I believe the focus is on the wrong area. Look to see if there any control panel options for sound when you on HDMI. It should detect and direct it seemlessly but these basic aspect don't appear to have been tested on these systems.
