PLASTIC Thinkpad T61???

2008-03-24, 18:24 PM
I am considering purchasing my 6th Thinkpad, a T61.  All of others were IBM machines, pre-Lenovo.  My first was the IBM "butterfly" & my current one is a T42, with 560E, 600E & T22 in between.  In my research, I see some bad reviews on the T61 & several mention that the case is now plastic?  Does this hold up?  I was particularly distressed to see that Lenovo warranties it for only one year (all my others came with a 3-year warranty that included free phone support from IBM) & charges EXTRA for all support.  I'd really like to hear some input on the T61 to help me decide whether to buy one or change my allegiance to another manufacturer.  Many thanks!

The cover is plastic because the Magnesium is underneath it as a "Space Frame".
The base warranty is usually 1 year but you can add up to 3 more years during the purchase if buying from Lenovo, or after the purchase. This is to keep the price down to compete in the marketplace.
The extra charge support is a new thing from Lenovo but it is different than the free support the warranty provides.

I have a T60 and an R61. I think they are both better than the T42 I used to have. If you read the forums you will see people complaining about everything from Vista problems, to too many stickers, don't like wide/narrow screens,  non-symmetrical screen bezel, economy machine not suitable for high end FPS games and the brown box just doesn't have the "Out of the Box Experience" that Apple does. No oohs and aahs at every unfolding of a flap when opening the shipping container.
Many of these complaints are from consumers where as IBM used to deal mainly with corporations, not consumers. Why do you think they wanted to sell the Thinkpad division? They seen the trend toward more consumers buying Thinkpads. When dealing with corporations there is an IT dept between the consumer and IBM/Lenovo to act as a buffer.
While there have always been some consumers buying Thinkpads there are many more now than there used to be.

I'd encourage you to change your alliance, one less whiner I have to see here:smileysurprised:

I am amazed at the number of petty complaints, the sense of self-importance and entitlement shown by an admittedly few users.  Thank God calmer heads seem to prevail.  My hat is off to the mods and Lenovo employees on this forum.  I'd have sent these whiny children packing a long time ago.

Dear nkirksey:
Are you sure that T61 is the first T series thinkpad that using a plastic cover?  I have thought that is a common sense as shows from websites allover the internet. But Lenovo told me all the covers of T series include T42 are made of PLASTIC after they replaced my original T42 cover (2 professional technicians indicated the plastic one is bigger, weaker comparing with my original alloy cover, the difference is just like paper board and paper ) , when Lenovo cann't restore that.

An organisation I work with has large number of T61s which are performing well in the field, replacing t4x models as they come out of warranty.  There is no indication that they are any less robust than T4x models and some indication that they are requiring less support!

Lenovo offers a variety of warranties at different price points for different markets.  Some models come with 1 year warranties, some with 3 year warranties.  The warranties offered are generally fitted to the needs of the market concerned.  Longer warranties generally comes with higher price tags.... there aren't any free lunches!

And I'm being restrained. No, I mean physically restrained, it's part of the plea bargain.

Previous models of T series such as the T42/T60 were actually made with magnesium top covers whereas the R series product generally used an ABS plastic top cover.  New enhancements in the T61 and select R61's include a new 2 piece top cover with a magnesium roll cage covered with SEPC (Super Elastic Poly-carbonate).  This allows for both rigidity and shock absorbancy.  You will also find that the wireless performance in the T61 is about 35% better (abg vs. abg) than it's predecessor.  One of the benefits of the ThinkPad engineering is that the chassis are redesigned every model in order to make enhancements and not just throwing in the latest flavour of processor etc.  Hope this helps.  Enjoy!

That is so true, carbon_unit

(a) People just love to complain about trivia and ...

(b) It explains why iPod, iPhone, i(etc), are seen by so many members of the public as being far more superior products than they actually are.

However, I imagine that Thinkpads are still mostly the choice of discerning users and not those who forget that the box / flashy design / catchy names etc bear little weight when it comes down to actually using the product.
