Flickering screen

Hi,

Since today I experience a flickering screen problem with my laptop (ThinkBook 15 G3 ACL Laptop - Type 21A4)

The flickering occurs when I open Cisco's Webbex and when remote controlling with Teamviewer, but also when I unlock my computer it flickers a few seconds, or when rebooting / starting my laptop.  So when I kill the Webbex process the screen is just fine. When I start Webbex it starts flickering again.
With Teamviewer the screen starts flickering when remote controlling and stops flickering when i stop remote controlling.

It is only the laptop screen that is flickering, The 2 remote screens connected with a thinkpad usb-c hub works fine.

I tried to solve it but without success, the things I have tried:

* Started safe mode: sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
* reinstall chipset / video driver
* Installed olders video driver
* Bios update
* uninstalled the latest Windows 11 patches
* Since uninstalling the latest Windows 11 updates wasnt the solutions I updated all Windows updates back again.

Current Windows version: 22H2 Build: 22621.1635
AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics version: 31.0.14051.5006 (20-4-2023), but same issue with version: 30.0.13044.0 (7-12-2021)

Hope you can assist on this one.

Kinds regards,

Niels

Thanks again for your reply. New user had the same problem. I just uninstalled the display drivers again since I had this feeling this must be it..
Installed the driver with amd adrenalin software and now the problem is gone :) The first time I used the lenovo detect driver software.

No more flickering screen for now, thanks for your help!

Flickering screen

Re:Flickering screen

Welcome to Lenovo Community Nelusszz,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Webex? Also, check the Webex settings. Open the application and see if there are any settings related to the display that could be causing the flickering. You can also try adjusting the video settings to see if that makes a difference. If you're using Webex in a web browser, try using a different browser to see if the issue persists.

Re:Flickering screen

Hi Hassen,

Thanks for your reply. I did try to reinstall Webex aswell. Also when it was uninstalled the screen still was flickering with remote controlling using teamviewer. Also uninstalled teamviewer. But still got moments while booting where the screen flickers. Or when I unlock my screen. So I'm afraid it has nothing to do with 3rd party settings. But they might use a Windows component that triggers the flickering.

Also tried YouTube in webbrowser this doesn't trigger the flickering so not an issue.

It doesn't feel like a hardware failure. But maybe Microsoft/amd related?

Re:Flickering screen

Hello Nelusszz,

It is possible that an issue with the graphics hardware or the display itself is causing the screen to flicker during booting. However, there are some troubleshooting steps that we can try to address the issue. To start, I recommend performing a power drain followed by a BIOS reset. In the BIOS Setup Utility, navigate to the "Exit" menu using the arrow keys. Select "Load Default Settings" or "Reset to Default" option, depending on the BIOS version.

Recommended ways to enter BIOS - ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation

Re:Flickering screen

Hi Hassen,

I just tried to power drain and reset the bios to the default settings but unfortunately no change.

PS no flickering in the bios. So I guess Windows is loading the drivers when the Lenovo logo is on the screen (first no flicker but after 5secs it starts) made a photo to show you.

Regards,

Niels

Re:Flickering screen

Hello Nelusszz,

I noticed the photo you sent shows screen flickering during post (Power On Self Test), which could indicate a possible issue with the graphics hardware or the display. Despite trying several troubleshooting steps like safe mode scans, driver updates, and a BIOS update, the issue persists. To further diagnose and resolve the issue, it may be necessary to contact Lenovo support or seek help from a qualified repair technician.

Re:Flickering screen

Hi Hassen,

I understand what you are saying. Its the end of the logo screen when i happends. So I think it is loading the Windows drivers when the flickering starts and the Post is already over. Since the flickering doesn't happen in the bios and I can stop the flickering with a clean boot or normal boot without Webex and teamviewer in Windows. Im not sure it is a hardware issue.

Do you think this is the only way to go? I'm IT specialist so as long it isnt an hardware issue I can troubleshoot a lot for myself without having to send the laptop away. But just stuck in the ideas what to test. If you have any ideas to make sure it is the hardware or not please let me know.

Kind regards,

Niels

Re:Flickering screen

Hello Nelusszz,

Thank you for providing more information. Creating a new Windows user account is a good idea to try. This can help us identify if the flickering issue is related to your current user account or if it is a problem that affects the whole system. If the flickering persists on the new user account, it is likely to be a system-wide problem and further troubleshooting may be required. However, if the flickering stops on the new user account, it suggests that the issue is specific to your current user account, and you can focus on troubleshooting that account specifically.

Re:Flickering screen

Hello Nelusszz,

You're welcome! I'm glad to hear that the issue with the flickering screen has been resolved by reinstalling the display drivers using the AMD Adrenalin software. It seems that the Lenovo detect driver software may not have installed the correct or compatible drivers for your system, causing the problem.

Please feel free to post again if have other concerns.

Cheers!
