ThinkBook 13s G2 - Bitlocker enabled during Firmware update

2021-07-01, 15:01 PM

Good morning all,

I have to say this is the first time I've seen this one happen. I purchased a Thinkbook 13s G2 for one of our VPs, set it up with a local account (due to travel and some of our sites not having internet at all) and everything has been going well for him, UNTIL a few days ago when he attempted to run a Lenovo firmware update and was met with the Bitlocker Recovery screen. Normally no problem, except...

-I did not enable Bitlocker on that machine

-I set the machine up with a local account

-We checked the recovery key page for the only Microsoft account ever associated with that device, nothing was found there

Normally the bitlocker key has to go SOMEWHERE when it's enabled, so it's looking like my only options are a clean install and/or attempting a retrieval through less than savory methods.

AND OF COURSE, the machine has documents saved on it that are "irreplaceable" but backed up nowhere.

Not expecting any miracles, just curious as to whether or not any of you have seen this happen with recent Lenovo firmware updates

Hello TC Lofton!

Welcome to community forums

Did the computer come along with Windows 10 Pro because the Windows 10 Home doesn't have this feature?

If yes, and no security key sent to the MS account associated with the device then I would suggest contacting Microsoft about it.

Let us know.

Yes, that's correct. Win10 Pro and nothing sent to the account. I will contact Microsoft for further assistance.
