ThinkBook 13s-IWL (20R9) doesn't recognize 4K screen: "Display Connetion might be limited"

Hi,

I have been using a ThinkBook 13s-IWL (20R9) for some time now. Now I bought a LG 27UL850-W 68 (Ultra HD, 4K) screen to replace my old Full HD BenQ screen, but am encountering problems:

The User Guide tells me the laptop should be able to work with the screen with 60hz via USB-C ("USB-C to DP: 3840 X 2160 pixels, 60 Hz"). But this doesn't work at all, when I connect the screen via USB-C I get the following warning/error message in Windows 10:

display-limited.PNG

The linked website in the notification by Microsoft https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4012609/windows-10-fix-usb-c-problems#connectionlimited unfortunately does not help at all and offers no working solution.

All drivers (including Bios) are up to date according to the Lenovo website (which identified the laptop via serial number).
The screen and cables I am using work perfectly fine via USB-C with iPad, Macbook and Pixelbook.
Using HDMI I can also use the screen with my Thinkbook, but as usual for a 4K screen it only supports 30hz and has considerable lag - which is not acceptable for me really.

Any idea what could be going wrong here and how I could fix it?

Best,
Jan

Hi janpio! Welcome to our forums community.

What is the current resolution on the current external display? Could you try changing the resolution and check if that works for you. Let us know how did it go.

I can not unfortunately as Windows 10 does not show the screen in "Display Settings" (and the screen also keeps complaining that there is no input). Seems to me Windows really does not recognize the screen via USB-C for some reason.

The resolution of the external display can be found under the monitor settings, not on the computer. Let us know.

Ah, sorry I misread your response.

The monitor's resolution is its native 3840 X 2160 pixels. I could not find an option to change this in the screen itself, just to change the HUD size which had no influence over that the computer does not recognize the screen unfortunately.

How about the HDMI, did it work on the new monitor? Could you try connecting the laptop to other external monitors through the USB-C to check if it's connected? And also, provide us the system information so we could check the OS build version and BIOS version? Type msinfo on the search box beside the Windows icon on the left side of the screen.

HDMI works, but as expected only with 30hz which is quite laggy.

> Could you try connecting the laptop to other external monitors through the USB-C to check if it's connected?
I could not get the laptop to power any 4K screen via USB-C unfortunately.
(I could get all other laptops with USB-C to power the screen though)

I will provide the system information as quick as possible, travelling right now.

Got a suggestion on the same question in the German Lenovo forum:
Buy a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and try that - and it works!

I am happy that it works of course, but at the same time... what the heck?

Wow, I had the same issue with a dell U2719DC and it baffles me that it doesn't work with USB-C. The solution with a separate adapter does work strangely enough... Thanks

And we're back...
