ThinkBook 14 G2 Screen

2021-06-28, 4:09 AM

I recently bought the following ThinkBook 14 G2:

Part No: 20VF004GUS
Configuration Details
●  Processor: AMD® Ryzen™ 7 4700U Processor (2.0 GHz, up to 4.10 GHz Max Boost, 8 Cores, 8 Threads, 8 MB Cache)
●  Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64
●  Display Type: 14.0” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, touchscreen, 300 nits
●  Memory: 16 GB DDR4 3200MHz (8 GB Soldered + 8 GB DIMM)
●  Hard Drive: 512 GB PCIe SSD
●  Warranty: 1 year Depot or Carry-in
●  Graphics: Integrated AMD Radeon™ Graphics

I found the screen to be dim and not any better than 4 years old Dell touch screen which is 250nits. The screen also has a yellow tinge as well and you have to set the color to 8000+ to get some of the yellow out. Not sure if is the AMD graphics or just the screen.

In Device Manager when I check under Monitor and Generic PnP Monitor and then hardware ID it shows CMN14F5

On ebay this same p/n is being sold as 250nits touch screen.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/250nit-14-0-FHD-IPS-Touch-laptop-LCD-Screen-CHIMEI-N140HCN-EA1-CMN14F5-40PIN-HP-/224333242237

So is Lenovo sending out the wrong screens as 250nits touchscreen is also an option on Lenovo? What is supposed to be 300nit touch screen on TB 14 G2 hardware id?

Can anyone check and see what they have especially if they think there laptop screen is good?

Thanks

Hi KamaB!

Welcome to community forums

The ThinkBook 14 G2 ARE has different model variants. Some have 220 nits, 250 nits, and 300 nits and you can refer to the product spreadsheet here: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkBook/ThinkBook_14_G2_ARE?MT=20VF

In finding parts, I suggest using the FRU number/part number instead and you can find it on your end through this link: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ph/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkbook-series/thinkbook-14-g2-are/20vf/20vf004gus/parts/display/model

Filter the commodity type to LCD. Provide the serial number if you want to check the built-in parts.

In regards to the issue with the display, could you send us a screenshot of the issue with the display?

Try updating the laptop through the Lenovo Vantage app and install all available updates especially the BIOS and the display driver.

If the issue is the same, send us a screenshot of the display driver and the BIOS.

Let us know.

Re:ThinkBook 14 G2 Screen

Hello,

I am attaching the order details confirmation I got from Lenovo and it shows both the model # and screen as 300 nits.

order

Should I post the S/N here? or PM you?

The laptop is recent build but I had updated the BIOS to latest 1,1.

As mentioned P/N of the screen under hardware ID shows it to be the one that matches 250nits. when I searched the internet See screen shot.

It matches to a 250nits touchscreen and not 300nits

https://www.ebay.com/itm/224333242237?hash=item343b4d9f7d:g:NnIAAOSwjGVgFLfz

There is no way to corelates the p/n from the BOM you have shared as they are Lenvovo's internal p/n without description of the component specs.

What should be the details of CHIMEI screen which is 300nits touch screen?

Thanks.

Update:

I used Hwinfo to find more info about the monitor it shows the following.

It seems the screen is from week 16 of 2018.

WOW? I was not aware Lenovo was putting such old components into the ThinkBooks.

Can someone tell me how to start a return process? I usually buy Dell and this is my first Lenovo laptop.

The manufacturer code also shows an offering with 300 nits aside from 250.

It may be proper to search instead of using the OEM FRU 5D11B48759 and likewise use some apps to measure nits available online.

It is difficult to find spec of any of the screens on the part list. Only place some have info is when someone is selling it on ebay.

I used the Microsoft app called DisplayHDR test and the basic initial test shows it to be 250nits.

My 5 year old Dell also shows it to be 250nits. Not sure how accurate  it is.

You can confirm the same part number for the LCD panel along with its specifications by reaching out to the technical support team. They would be able to get the in-built part using your serial number directly on their internal tool.

I just ran this test too and it says 250 nits. I'm gonna return my laptop although the display may be the right one, when I google it shows 300 nits, it is just way too dim and I'm not satisfied with some other things.

Some people who got the 250 nit screen mentioned the yellow tint as well to a varying degree so I'm not surprised if it is present on the 300 nit models as well. The panel on your laptop is 45% NTSC, so color will be somewhat off if you are used to displays with 100% SRGB/72% NTSC. Calibrate your display color and see if it helps with the yellow tint.

As for it being dim, some say disabling the Vari-Bright setting in the AMD Radeon software helps. Otherwise, I hope you are still within the return window.
