ThinkBook 14s Yoga ITL - Bad webcam camera image blurry and grainy (Sonix, SunplusIT)

Hi there,

 

I just got two brand new ThinkBook 14s Yoga ITL and unfortunately, the integrated camera image quality is very blurry and grainy.

Actually, that's a shame for a 720p 0.9 Megapixel webcam on a business notebook in 2021. Even my old notebook from 2010 has a better camera...

 

These two units come with different camera modules:

  • SunplusIT VID_5986&PID_212B&REV_5641
    original driver version 5.0.18.82, updated to version 5.0.18.119 from https://catalog.update.microsoft.com
  • Sonix VID_13D3&PID_56FF&REV_1919
    original driver version 10.13.19041.2, updated to version 10.13.19041.25 from https://catalog.update.microsoft.com

While the SunplusIT camera on the first unit is atrocious, the Sonix camera is even worse :(
Updating drivers or deleting and reinstalling the whole device doesn't improve anything.

 

@Lenovo developers: Are you aware of these issues and are you planning to release a fix, such as a firmware update (this has been done for other integrated camera model in the past)?

 

On Parts Lookup I can find the following compatible cameras:

Are the refresh versions any better in regard to these issues?

 

Could anyone please help to fix this?

Otherwise, I would have to return both laptops to Lenovo and get my money back.

Can you share a screenshot of the sample images on both devices?

 

Can you provide the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK or 20UD000BUS) of the two laptops?

 

This would help us detail more about your machine variant while keeping the confidentiality of your serial number.

I'm dealing with a similar issues with a SunplusIT camera on a ThinkBook 14 G2 ITL Laptop (20VD0033US).  I do see there is a Windows 11 driver from early September, but I'm not sure if I can use this on a Windows 10 installation.

 

I have the latest Lenovo published driver installed.  One main issue is that the "auto-exposure" setting makes the image very dark periodically which renders it unusable for video calls.  I am able to uncheck the auto-exposure setting but then it re-enables itself after a reboot.  Hoping to get some clarity from this thread - unfortunate that Lenovo is using such poor quality camera hardware/software in their machines.

Personally, it appears fine for any universal standard camera.

 

It may not be a highlighted feature as offered on other variants but its own feature as the targeted design is for mobility.

@a3rdparty  I would suggest you create a different thread since you are referring to a different model from the original post. Provide as many details as you can and do not forget to include the MTM of your device. Hope to see your post soon.

Yes, focus is on portability as for any laptop or smartphone. By the way, even the cheapest phones have better cameras nowadays.

 

Anyway, just like many other users, I'm really unhappy with these two integrated cameras models.

 

Is there any way Lenovo could improve things here? Drivers, firmware?

 

Could you check what the difference is on the compatible "refresh" cameras that appear on parts lookup?

 

Do have have a way to compare and tell how the other models perform?

This integrated camera is for the purpose of standard use. If using the camera with more lighting conditions does not satisfy your need then adding an external camera would be the best option for you.

This camera it's too crappy even for standard use. The blurry image will make a bad impression to my business contacts when conferencing. And no, an external camera is not an acceptable solution. Lenovo should make an effort here and work on a fix!

 

Found an even newer driver version

10.13.19041.26, but I don't see any improvements...

 

Could you please answer my questions related to the other camera modules?
