ThinkBook 15 G2 ARE // dual boot via two ssd ?

2021-09-14, 18:29 PM

Hello,

I recently purchase this thinkbook 15 G2 ARE : https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/ThinkBook/ThinkBook_15_G2_ARE?M=20VG0008FR

With windows 10 pro preinstalled.

And I want to setup a dual boot with ubuntu on a second ssd.

I searched if it is possible to install a second ssd, it seems feasable.

( the specs plus this topic : https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkBook-Notebooks/ThinkBook-15-Gen-2-adding-2nd-SSD/m-p/5052515)

But my question is : Will this second ssd be bootable ?

And I'm worrying a bit about secure boot too...

That would avoid me to touch windows and to reduce its partition.

Thanks for your help,

Hi jorism!

Welcome to community forums

We do not recommend doing it since the machine is not listed as compatible to run a Linux OS and you can refer it here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd031426-linux-for-personal-systems

However, you can still wait for fellow users' suggestions and recommendations especially for those who tried such a setup.

Regards

Hi,

I don't have a similar machine but looking over the spec you linked and the general 20VG specs I would expect it to be bootable.

Your specific spec lists an installed 2242 drive and an empty 2280 slot, with the ability to support two SSDs.  Some other 20VG models have a 2280 SSD - so that slot must be bootable - and an empty 2242 slot.

Secure Boot shouldn't be an issue since Ubuntu will boot in Secure mode.

It would be preferable to have a comment from someone who has actually done this, but perhaps the above gives you something to contemplate.

Thanks for your response!

Before my purchase, I checked a bit on the net, and it seems that ubuntu is  not "too bad" on this machine in this blog post : https://lucraymond.net/2021/02/07/thinkbook-15-gen-2-amd-linux-review/

And I'm not concerned by the problem of firmware update, because I'll do a dual boot, so windows will still be available.

(there is two other interesting posts about this machine and linux : https://lucraymond.net/2021/07/09/fixing-suspend-resume-on-lenovo-thinkbook-15-g2-are-laptop-with-amd-in-linux/ and https://lucraymond.net/2021/08/16/update-a-lenovo-laptop-firmware-when-you-run-linux/)

Anyway, now that the machine is purchased, I don't risk much more than the price of the ssd that I will add...

Thanks for your response !

So I'll purchase a news ssd and install it, but how to choose the right one ?

I have to buy an "M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0x2" ...

Is this ssd compatible for example ? https://www.samsung.com/fr/memory-storage/nvme-ssd/980-500gb-nvme-pcie-gen-3-mz-v8v500bw/

I can't find exactly ssd with "PCIe 3.0x2" this one is "3.0x4" is it important for the compatibility ?

Same here : https://www.crucial.fr/ssd/p2/ct500p2ssd8

Thanks for your help,

Most any m.2 2280 NVMe SSD should work.  Here's what Crucial says is compatible:

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/lenovo/thinkbook-15-g2-are#ssd

PCIe 3.0x2 and x4 refers to the generation of SSD (3.0) and the number of PCIe lanes it can use or in this case likely the number of PCIe lanes available in the slot.  Both the generation and number of lanes should be up/down compatible.  An x4 SSD will not run at full possible speed in an x2 slot - it will max out at about half the potential speed, depending of course on the native speed of the SSD itself.

Hope that makes some sense...

Re:ThinkBook 15 G2 ARE // dual boot via two ssd ?

Hello,

Some news about my question!

I purchase the Crucial P2 CT500P2SSD8 and install it in my thinkbook.

No problem.

I installed Ubuntu 21.04 on this new ssd, everything went well except a little screen after installation asking to do something with "mok", I skeep this step, and no problems.

The dual boot work well (with and without secureboot)

And for the compatibility with ubuntu, the biggest problem is the wifi which is not supported by default.

I had to install this driver : https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw89 and now it works.

There some strange behaviour with brightness control for example, but nothing blocking.

I'l update this thread if I find other blocking things...

Thanks!
