8171-acu Making a image

2008-08-20, 14:47 PM

I have several of this model, 8171-acu. I have the reload/recovery cds for it and you don't have to put the Windows product key in when you load it from the cds. I am trying to find out if I can reload one of them and then make a image. Then take that image and use it on another 8171-acu.

First off, I couldn't sysprep it because that would remove the license key and then when I imaged another one and started it up it would as for the Windows key.

So since I have a set of recovery cds that will work on all the 8171-acu 's that I have could I just image one and then use that image on the others?

   Thanks for any help/info,

Will

hello will your idea seem great how ever one copy of windows may be installed only on one pc at a time for more info see EULA

having said that if you are using windows vista then yeah its quite possible because you can use the product key you get with each system to activate it after installing windows

generally OEM's pc's are pre-activated at the factory itself so my idea is just a thought but i think you have the recovery cds for all the systems...use them with their respective pc's that must be the only safe option!

Yes I know that only one copy of Windows can be installed on one computer. But I have 10 of the 8171-acu model computers and my reload cds can be used on any of them or all at once. So that being the case if I made a image couldn't I use that on all 10? I just would not be able to using it on anything but those 10.

Or if it won't work like that could I make a image, sysprep and remove the Windows product key and then every time I load that image on one of the other 10 I just put the product key in that is on the side of that computer?

Will,

please take a look at this MS article on preserving OEM pre-activation.  Hopefully this will help.

Thanks for the info but I don't understand what this would do. This article says to sysprep the machine and use the product key in the article but it is some sort of generic key not the one that came with the machine so what will that accomplish? Does that key tell Windows to require activation?

This is a little confusing because I was going to sysprep the machine which of course will remove the product key and then on each of the 10 identicle machines that I have and apply the image to I was going to use the product key that is on the sticker on the side of the PC.

Ok looking at the article again it looks like this would preserve the OEM pre-activation for this particular machine, I don't think this would work in my case because I have 10 machines with 10 different product key. I need to put those into each machine after I image them so using Sysprep should allow me to do that.

Let me know what you think.
