A61e only Beeps after BIOS-Update

2008-01-27, 12:28 PM
Hello,

I just made a BIOS-Update like described on the Lenovos Website (Flash over OS "Vista" ) - everything worked well and finished with a success-message. But now I rebooted my machine and it doesn't work :( Only a single Beep from the PC-Speaker every 10 seconds.

My system is a: 6417-14G

Can anyone help me? Did I destroy my complete system? I made everything in the way like it was described on the website....

According to the IBM beep-list, your error 2-5-1 is not documented.
That would theoretically mean a system board failure.
Are you sure about that sequence?
Read the above list, perhaps it gives you more insight?

When you inserted the CD, did you tell it to boot from CD?

Can you run PC Doctor from this list?

Hi, actually it only beeps one time (short) every 10 seconds. The screen is blank (no video). After i insert a CD-ROM (with Flash Bios on it) the machine starts to beep 2-5-1.
When i eject the cd-rom then the short beep (every 10 seconds) comes back.... ?!

Can you put the 'older' BIOS back in?
Why did you update the BIOS in the first place?
(If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it).

Just had the same problem on my A61e after flashing the latest BIOS level under VISTA. All appeared to be OK but at next boot, I just got a series of single beeps. On trying an ISO CD flash version, got 1-5-2 sequence.
One possible solution is outlined in: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-45385   Flash recovery boot block jumper procedure, but this appears to require a diskette reader and there is no means of attaching one other than via USB. Not sure this will work??
I believe we should report the issue to Lenovo before some other users suffer the same fate.

I tried the "Flash recovery boot block jumper procedure" outlined in the Lenovo web-site, using a USB floppy drive rather than the A: drive as outlined in the documentation and it worked. Machine now working perfectly. Your girlfriend will be delighted... and if you borrow a USB floppy drive it costs nothing and required zero engineering skill

BBR (Boot Block Recovery) as we call it internally is a great option for those systems that at first glance appear dead.  One thing that you have be sure of before performing this fix tho is that there is no doubt about the memory working properly.  If you have a bad DIMM a BBR will fail most catastrophically.  I've used this feature of most of out system boards to bring a lot of systems back from the dead without needing a new one.  It's a pretty handy little feature if I do say so myself. :)

It was good to find this thread because I have exactly the same problem. I bought a new a61e (6417-14G) and updated the BIOS using ThinkVantage System Update in Windows Vista. The update went fine and System Update said that I need to reboot the computer. I did that but nothing happened. There was only a single beep every 10 seconds and monitor stayed blank.

I also carried out the recovery process by changing Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper position and inserting Flash BIOS CD. The beeping changed to 2-5-1 but nothing else happened.

I guess the solution would be to use Flash BIOS floppy but I don't have USB floppy drive. Is it possible to e.g. copy Flash BIOS to USB memory stick somehow (and try to boot with it) or should I just wait until a Lenovo service person comes to see it?

My advice would be to download the diskette version of the BIOS flash on another PC with a diskette drive then buy/borrow a USB diskette drive. The documentation I saw only mentioned diskette as potential medium for this process. A USB key may work? I think you will find your warranty T&C 's specifically exclude problems caused by a failed BIOS upgrade. If Block Boot Recovery doesn't work, I'm afraid you have created a rather expensive paper weight. It may be cheaper to buy another one than pay an engineer to fit a new motherboard etc.

By the way the Block Boot Recovery process wiped out my m/c type and serial number so I had to reinstate these. This in turn caused  problems with software registration and in the end I restored the whole machine to factory ship condition. Now all is well.
