Brandnew Lenovo M93 won't boot with USB device plugged in...

2013-08-28, 18:31 PM

Since last week i got the Lenovo M93 with Intel i7-4770 CPU @ 3,40GHz. With 8 GB on board it's a real great machine!

The only thing i notice is when I boot the machine, it hangs on the opening screen, which says 'Lenovo'. Only after I remove all (2) USB connected HD's it advances and starts booting Windows. At that time i can reconnect the HD's

What can be the problem? The only 2 devices are external HD's which worked well on my 6 year old HP machine. One of them has an external powersupply.

I tried to change the bootorder in teh BIOS, and even excluded USB devices from booting. But still the system won't start.

I have found that my m72e does the same thing (freezes during boot at the Lenovo logo) with the USB cable from my ViewSonic TD2220 touchscreen connected. I've updated the BIOS to the latest version which did not solve the problem. I can only boot by removing the USB cable until after it boots up or by turning the monitor off during the first part of boot up (NB the cable can remain connected). It doesn't happen when simply waking up from hibernation. Other USB devices seem to work OK.

I have the exact same problem, except I have the M93p Tiny i5 processor. I also have the external DVD drive that came with the computer. No matter which port I connect to, it won't boot. I've tried changing every possible setting in the BIOS that might affect the boot process but no luck here.

Windows 7 or Windows 8?

External drives MBR (2TB or smaller) or GPT (larger than 2TB)?

Legacy BIOS or UEFI BIOS?

I have an M93p mid-tower running Win7 Pro x64, and have an external 2TB Verbatim USB 3.0 drive plugged in (to a USB 3.0 port on the rear) permanently.  This is the drive that my daily/weekly/monthly scheduled backups write to.

Absolutely no problem re-booting my M93p.  I added a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD to the machine and copied the Lenovo-provided Win7 over from the delivered 1TB spinner, making it the boot drive.  The original 1TB spinner was re-purposed to be a second "data" drive.  Otherwise, this is the very same Win7 OS that was pre-installed by Lenovo.

Again, no problem re-booting with the USB 3.0 drive plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

I restored to Windows 8 from the Lenovo disks, then upgraded to 8.1.  I'm booting from UEFI bios, the external is 3TB and is MBR, which is the way it came from the store.  Do you think it could be because its MBR partition style?

I don't know how a hard drive of greater than 2TB cannot be GPT.  At least that's what it is supposed to be.  MBR is for 2TB or less.  If it came from the factory as MBR, that sounds wrong to me.  Unless only 2TB is "visible".

All the reports on this forum (in a number of separate threads) about this same problem all talk about (1) Windows 8/8.1, (2) UEFI BIOS, and (3) external drives larger than 2TB.

In my own "problem-free" case, it is (1) Windows 7, (2) legacy BIOS, and (2) external drive of 2TB.

I'm not denying that there would seem to be a Lenovo problem in the UEFI BIOS, but getting a 3TB drive that's partitioned as MBR sounds wrong.  How about if you just delete all partitions on it, and recreate new partitions... with GPT.  Use Partition Wizard.  Does it make any difference?  Or can you still not boot successfully with the USB drive plugged in?

i didn't think you could have drives over 3TB on mbr either, but it looks like you may be able too according to this:

I'll try some other USB drives when I get a chance and report back.

I had the same issue on my Lenovo G580. As suggested on the forums after trying some BIOS tweeks something worked.

Re: Brandnew Lenovo M93 won't boot with USB device plugged in...

Hi all,

Did anyone ever figure this out?  I am trying to do the following, and getting the same "won't boot" issues.

I have 10 M93p machines.  Using first as a test.  I am building these using Microsoft SCCM 2012.  First, I booted from small 2GB USB flash drives and imaged the test machine over the network directly from SCCM.  Worked, but was slow.  So I decided to make a "standalone" image on a USB 3.0 SS flash drive at 64GB.  SCCM wouldn't build the flash drive as bootable media unless I partitioned it down to FAT32 at 30GB, so I did that.

But NOW, if I plug this new flash drive in anywhere to the M93p, it hangs on the "Lenovo" splash screen perpetually.

Never progresses.

ARGH!  Help!  Thanks!

Chris
