The only solution to this issue is get a new USB. It worked for me after I purchased a new USB 3.0. Lenovo USB creation tool cannot create fresh partition for Windows 10 pro image installation on older usb's no matter how clean it is or however it's formatted reason due to bad sectors.

The problem is that the tool only supports USB key with GPT partition type and doesn't support MBR.

Getting a new USB pen drive worked because most recent USB pen drives come with GPT partition table.

I used a disk partition tool and changed the partition table to GPT from MBR, after that it worked perfectly.

This thread pops up first in google results first so I thought I'd provide a bit more detailed description on how to solve the problem. I was able to go past this error messages by performing following steps:

- Plug in USB disk to PC

- In search field enter "diskmgr" (no quotes) and start Disk Management tool

- Find USB disk and delete all volumes by right-clicking on them and selecting "Delete Volume..." menu item. Make sure you're deleting volumes from correct disk.

- Whole disk should be marked as "Unallocated" now. Right-click on it and select "New Simple Volume..."

- Click "Next"

- Leave default size as-is and click "Next"

- Leave drive letter as-is and click "Next"

- Select "Do not format this volume" and click "Next"

- Click "Finish"

- Switch back to creator tool and procede to writing disk

Hi,

I'd suggest firstly format target USB key to exFAT, and then use the tool. Worked for me several times.

Fixed it by using easeus software. I formated it as a LOGICAL partition, NFTS, 4Kb blocksize. Worked as expected.

Hi all,

Here is the solutions.

I'm facing the same issue, i could not format partition and create revocery environment with lenovo usb recovery creator for my laptop.

I've try to different way and different usb flash to create recovery environment, for example format NTFS, FAT, FAT32, exFat etc. with windows disk manager.

Every time Lenovo Usb Recovery Creator say "Failed to format partitions. Please try again."

Because my flash drivers is not fresh, i have used them many times before.

After thinking, i need to change partition schema with Rufus.

It's succesfuly created.

Hi, I had to fix MBR (Master Boot Record) of my USB disk too since I used it for Linux or macOS (I don't remember which) before.

I used bootsect.exe to fix MBR.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/bootsect-command-line-options

  1. Open an Administrator Command Prompt.
  2. Run the command below.
bootsect /nt60 YourUSBDiskDriveLetter: /mbr
