Desktop thinkcentre E73 and 1903 update

2019-06-17, 15:02 PM

I have updated from 1809 to 1903 and the PC has now gone really slow and having issues with admin rights, I have chkdsk'd and scannowed but no issues found. Tried an inplace update in case windows was corrupted and get the message some hardware on this PC is incompatable with 1903 update. Can anyone shed any light in these issues please. I have had to revert to 1809 to make the PC useable again.

Thanks in anticipation.

It hasn't been a month since 1903 was formally released (May 21.)  I'm reading that other manufacturer's Haswell systems are getting the same hardware not compatible message, so it could be a case of Microsoft working through some issues.  I suggest waiting a month, and check the Lenovo "Systems tested with 1903 list" for E73 to be listed.  I recall a couple of feature releases ago, it took a while for my M73 to be listed.

Both my ThinkPad T430s and my ThinkCentre M92p got the 1903 update with no problem (the M92p jumped directly from 1803 to 1903).  OTOH, my non-Lenovo PC, which uses all mainsteam components, got a message from Windows Update saying it wasn't quite ready yet with no real indication of why.  The "learn more" page did not help.

I got this notice on my M73 with 1809 today (it uses the same BIOS as E73, so motherboard is the same), when running a manual 'Check for updates'.   I advise waiting until getting a notice that 1903 is ready for this model system before updating:

Update:  Interesting, neither of my other two similar generation 1809 systems (but laptops, with mobile processors rather than the high-wattage desktop processor on the M73), are showing this notice after running a manual update on them.

OK, fair enough.

Even though it said the 1903 update was now available, downloading and installing has killed the PC AGAIN. Had to revert to 1809 again !

Re:Desktop thinkcentre E73 and 1903 update

I updated my M73 SFF i5-4570 to 1903 a couple of weeks ago (along with my 2 laptops.)  The M73 uses the same BIOS as E73, but E73 uses the 'S' versions of i5 & i7.  The update on the M73 went smoothly, and has been running well since then.  Given the problems written about the 1903 release, I waited until 1909 was about to drop before updating (I'll hold off updating to 1909 for my usual 4 months, or until reliable.)

I do note that the M73 (and my X1 Carbon Gen 3 laptop) is not on the "Lenovo devices tested for Windows 10 version 1903" list, but both were for the 1809 list.  Despite that, they and a HP Elitebook laptop, also with Haswell and no longer on HP's tested list, are running well with 1903.

Be sure to run a couple of passes of the Registry cleaner in the free version of CCleaner to clean up after the update.  And after a month to ensure a revert is not necessary, run Windows Disk Cleanup as Admin, and select all except "Windows upgrade log files", to free the maximum storage after the update.

Dec 2019 update:  it's been over a month, including after Microsoft's Dec update Tuesday, and all systems continue to run well.

Mar 2020 update:  all systems updated to 1909, and running well.
