Graphic Cards for M58 ThinkCentre?

2010-07-16, 12:30 PM

Hi.

I have a Lenovo Think Centre m58-6258 PC. The onboard graphic service is very disappointing. So I'm looking forward to buying a new Graphic Card so that I can get a decent enough performance while gaming.

I searched the website and got the following details

Video:

Intel GMA4500

HD3470 (RV620Pro) 256MB 64BIT ATX (VGA+DP)

Does this mean that only these cards can be installed in my PC? Or I could go for any in the ATI RADEON HD3xxx series? Moreover, what kind of a card will it support? Will it have to be a LOW-PROFILE card?

And is the ATI HD4670 Compatible?

I'd really like to go for a ATI RADEON HD5xxx series. Please help.

Thanks a lot.

Your m58 is a low-profile machine, so it will need a low-profile card.

I'm not sure which of the ATI line of cards are compatable, there are some cards, although they may fit in the machine, that are not supported.

you can't use the ATI 5xxx low profile graphics card, as it is not supported. You can use the 4xxx low profile graphics card, or the nvidia 9xxx low profile graphics card.

Hi guys,

Sorry to jump in on this but was looking for the same "pimp my M58" advice on graphics/cpu.  Would this work?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Radeon-PCI-E-LP-Graphics/dp/B002KF3U6Y/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_title_0

Will start a new thread on CPU if better etiquette but same question for a decent upgrade?

Thanks a lot

PS model is an A23 if that is relevant

as long as you have the normal pci-express slot, then this ATI 4650 low profile graphics card upgrade is okay.

Also, when you say better CPU, which CPU do you have in mind?

That's great thanks for the quick reply!

As for processor, I don't have a specific one in mind but we need to use this machine with some fairly powerful graphics software and I just don't think the E7200 that is in there is going to cope with it very well so am on the hunt for something I could just swap it out for that might be better suited for that kind of work?

Any suggestions would be greatfully received!

please elaborate on the software package that you are going to use?

You are able use the Quad Core line of CPU with FSB of 1333 mhz, like the Q8400 (Lenovo offer this on the M58).

Sure the guy uses Autodesk 3DS mainly:-

however I know he uses one or two other similar programs but that's his main one, don't get me wrong we may not need a new CPU (have already ordered the graphics card so will try it out with that first) but just thought while I was asking about one thing I may as well see if anyone had a good suggestion incase required so I could just order it as soon as we run in to issues.

if you are going to do a complex model the graphics card would be the biggest bottleneck, not the CPU. Your E7xxx is more than enough for most modelling work, your desktop is not a workstation orientated machine.

Consider something like a low profile Quadro FX 380 instead of the 4650. Consumer graphics card is not optimised for CAD and modelling softwares.
