Graphics Card required - Please Help with Spec

2008-05-28, 13:24 PM
Hi folks,

I'm needing to purchase a new graphics card to slot into an M55 (8808-94G) for a very graphics intensive software package.  I need to make sure the purchase I make is exactly compatible.

I've looked through the specification of the M55 and it quotes the PCI Riser slots as being "Slot 1: PCI Express x1", but what I would like clarified is what exactly does the "x1" refer to.  Is this that there is 1 slot for PCI express (which seems fairly obvious just by looking) or does it refer to a speed rating?

The software package recommends several NVIDIA Quadro family graphics cards and the bus for these cards shows as either "PCI Express x 16", which I'd assume the "x 16" is a speed rating, or  just "PCI Express".  Would the latter bus description be equivilant to "PCI Express x1" or would it need to specifically state "PCI Express x1"?

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Without trying to sound too clever, I would suggest considering the option.
It maybe you can find a graphics card which fits and suits your purposes, but then come the questions regarding other components; is the power supply strong enough? What about heat?

I don't think the M55 SFF (Small Form Factor) was ever designed for intenive graphics work, hence it only has the PCI Express x1 slot. AFAIK there is no "official" optional graphics card offered for them by Lenovo.

Your assumtion about speed is right; OrbitMicro offer quite a good explanation on their site here.

Thanks Andy.

So in your opinion I should just be looking at purchasing a new PC which will support "PCI Express x16" instead of trying to find a compatible graphics card with the current M55 model?

Re: Graphics Card required - Please Help with Spec

I think it would maybe be best to purchase a better spec PC.  The NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards are all recommended directly from the software company so I'd want one of them to make sure the system works well.  The particular card I was looking at was the FX 5500 and retails at around £1500 so I don't think a new spec PC to handle this will be out of budget for the project.

Thanks for your help.

That must be one heck of a graphics card :smileysurprised:  Maybe take a look at the new ThinkStations, from what I hear / read they seem to be pretty top machines.

It sure is, it's not for gaming as you'd probably guess, it's for CAD purposes and comes highly recomended by manufacturer, reviewers and users.

Nope, I did mean £1500, the card retails for around $2000 in the US.
