M55 8810: how to boot from SSD Drive?

2019-04-19, 20:02 PM

Greetings,

I am trying to extend the life of a ThinkCentre 8810WQG slim, Specifically I want to install a SATA SSD drive, then use it as a router for my home network. Problem: The boot process never sees the drive or offers the drive in the alternate boot options via the F12 key. However the software installs just fine when I boot the installer from  the CDROM, and I can tak ethe drive to anoter machine and run  whats there.

So is it possible to somehow force the 8810 to recognize my Kingston A400/120g SSD as a bootable device? The OS in question is linux -- Smoothwall and it installs just fine and also runs on a mechanical drive -- but I want to eliminate the traditional hard drive and go with  SSD.

THE BIOS appears to be the latest and last update available, according to the bootable cdrom utility package.

Thanks

I encountered a similar condition while upgrading my M55 8811 from its old HDD boot drive onto a new SSD boot drive.  The procedure required unhooking and re-hooking the drive signal and power cables, and right in the middle of this procedure the bios did not "see" the new SSD.  Initially I thought perhaps I had a bad SSD, but testing the SSD on another machine showed no problems with the drive itself.  The problem turned out to be a bad SATA cable.  Turns out, the MTBF on my M55 SATA cables was not infinity.  I would suggest repeating your procedure with known good SATA cables.

I have swapped cables, bought new cables and tried those, proved they work on  other dirves. My guess: it just doesn't support the rather modern SSD drive, as a boot device. The drive  is seen when the linux installer is booted from the DVD and the install runs without a hitch and I can take the drive over to my desktop and boot it on that machine, but the Lenovo just refuses to recognize the drive at boot time, no matter which SATA port I use, or cable, new or stock in the machine.

Thanks for your help and kind words.

Re: M55 8810: how to boot from SSD Drive?

Earlier this year I was able to migrate an 8811 HDD Win XP boot drive onto a modern WDBlue SSD, so I have to believe it should be possible to migrate an 8810 HDD boot drive onto whatever SSD you might have purchased. Three more questions:

-- Are you doing this via a cloning procedure using cloning software?

-- Are you attempting a dual boot configuration on the new SSD?

-- Are you able to plug the new SSD in to another computer and validate whether it is set as a system partition?

Hi,

>-- Are you doing this via a cloning procedure using cloning software?

No

>-- Are you attempting a dual boot configuration on the new SSD?

No

>-- Are you able to plug the new SSD in to another computer and validate whether it is set as a system partition?

Yes.

If I boot with the install DVD the drive is seen by the 8810 under the install process. It is tagged as bootable and that very same drive boots fine on my desktop machine, with that very install. It is never seen by the startup routine on the 8810

One thing I haven't done is completely clear the CMOS and start from scratch with an install. I am loathe to do this because the machine does work and I have had machines cease useful function when I perform a CMOS clearing, specifically name brand units ....

I think I am out of options for you.  Perhaps this bit of troubleshooting advice from Seagate will help:

Just to clarify a couple of points:  The HDD is completely removed from M55, and stayed removed?  And the OS was installed on the SSD while installed on the M55?  What OS are you installing?

Yes the original drive was removed then I ran the installer from booting a DVD, The OS in question for the install is a version of linux called Smoothwall. It uses grub as a bootloader. No other OS is loaded or runs or is optioned at boot time. Linux does not use or rely on the BIOS and does hardware probing to find all supported devices. The new SSD drive takes the install but never boots on the lenovo machine. After the install I can take the drive to another machine and boot the drive just fine or just mound the file system, or run fdisk to view the partition data. It's marked bootable and does boot elsewhere. Just not on the lenovo at this time. The F12 menu never shows the new SSD drive either. The SSD is brand new out of the Box, A Kingston A400/120g I haven't yet tried to clear the CMOS because I need the machine to serve the internet connection. I'll cobble together another machine to stand-in and then see if Clearing the CMOS allows the drive to be recognized.

I wonder if it's related to that Linux.  Are you able to try another?

I could but almost all distros use the same grub to make bootable drives. And Why does the install work in the machine on the other SATA hard drive and not the Kingston? I could stick with the old drive but te iddea was to save a few cents on power consumption, since the machine is on 24/7 and the new drive was at a great price and is faster.
