M55 Fan Header mystery

2021-04-26, 16:16 PM

So, what is the spec for the fan header on the M55?

One thing it is not is a standard 4-pin PWM fan connection.  There are indeed 4 pins coming out of the motherboard for the CPU fan, but the cable for the stock fan terminates in a 4-pin connector with tiny plastic guides that are just a wee bit wider than a standard PWM fan connector.  So one is not going to, say, take an off-the-shelf 92mm PWM case fan with a 4-pin connection and just plug that right in to the motherboard.  Too easy.  Perhaps Lenovo did their own, proprietary 4-pin fan header connection?  Any insight appreciated.

Hi JibHalyard!

Greetings

Unfortunately , we have limited resources for this model since it was released 15 years ago. Check if you can pull up some information here: https://download.lenovo.com/eol/index.html

You can also wait for fellow users' recommendations or suggestions especially for those who still have it working until now.

Regards

Off-piste skiing, the M55 Fan Header, and the M55 Hardware Maintenance Manual

2021-04-28, 19:04 PM

Alas, but the M55 Hardware Maintenance Manual and M55 User Guide have been deleted from the Lenovo End-Of-Life reference site.

Conveniently, I downloaded these some years back.  I have attached the M55 Hardware Maintenance Manual to this reply.

The M55 HMM only goes so far as to explain that there is a fan assembly and to provide the part number.  For this machine, the fan assembly consists of a plastic shroud and the fan itself.  The fan appears to be a vin ordinaire SuperRed 92mm PWM case fan, but appearances can be deceiving.  The fan assembly plastic shroud is indeed sized to fit a standard 92mm case fan.  But, if one were to do a comparison of the stock SuperRed fan to, say, a Noctua NF-A9 PWM fan, the 4-pin header plugs are slightly different--different enough for them to not be plug-compatible.  Apparently, not all 4-pin fan headers were created equally.

It would seem that I am pretty far off-piste with this question.
