M58 M58p: 4GB DIMM support for 16GB max memory (RAM, BIOS)

2013-03-28, 22:13 PM

Maximum DDR3 memory DIMM for ThinkCentre M58 MT M6234-A1U:    I find the owner's manual and it limits the machine to the then-current DDR3 2GB 1066MHz DIMM. Time and technology have moved on since then, as have BIOS updates. I am having trouble determining what the maximum allowed memory upgrade for this system is today (March 2013).  I can readily purchase DDR3 4GB 1066MHz DIMM and therefore wonder if I bought four of those memory sticks, would they work?

Download this book HERE, it is the discontinued Thinkcentre sales book. Your system is listed on page 239. The detailed overview states that 8gb is the maximum, but the sales book (AKA Dodson Sheet) indicates that 16gb is the maximum for your system. (Dodson Sheets are the definitive answer, and trump most other information Lenovo publishes) Looking to Intel for this information is fruitless, Lenovo highly customizes chipsets, so the info Intel posts often does not apply to lenovo systems. Just make sure you have the latest BIOs installed for your system.

You're right on the mark, 4gb sticks weren't available at launch, but came afterwards and seem to be supported on this machine.

The 8gb maximum is a chipset limit, not a BIOs limit. Not sure if 4gb sticks would work.

Good point. Do you know which chipset is used in the 6234-A1U? I guess what I need is documentation on the system board itself. Having that information perhaps going directly to the manufacturer's chipset doc (assume Intel) I can see if the manufacturer can provide the definitive answer.

(The hardware manuals for this unit, http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/46r4780.pdf and http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/46r4690.pdf, do not provide the level of detail I need for this question.)

Kingston Memory has 4GB modules available, and state that the max is 16GB

They are not the same, the memory timing must be an exactly right for your system, hence the different part number. (Wiki "memory timing" for more info.)

The only parts guaranteed to work are the ones given on the page for your system.   I often buy memory direct from Kingston as they had the best pricing.
