M900 Tower PSU upgrade

2016-12-22, 16:57 PM

This is my first time upgrading a PSU. I've replaced the stock PSU with a EVGA 500B Bronze Power Supply - 100-B1-0500-KR (so many wires, so few places to put them!) After reading many threads here, I uderstand that I need a 24-to-10 pin adapter from moddiy.com (ordered). My question is what goes to the 4-pin connector on the mother board (location 2 on the diagram in the manual)? The new PSU has a double 4-pin connector (that fits). My question is: do I use just one of these connectors here, something else, or just leave it blank? Thanks in advance

Use just 1x 4-pin:   Mobo has 4-pin 12V connector, but PSU has 8-pin

Thanks again for the info on for the 4-pin connector. One more question. The OD and SDD came powered from the motherboard (position 12 on the manual diagram). Since I'm also adding an HDD, would it be better to power all these directly from the new PSU? Or does this matter at all? I appreciate your help.

I would power it all directly from the PSU, one of the benefits of a after-market power supply.

That's what I 'guessed' might be the case, but beind new to this, thought I'd ask. Now I just await the 24 to 10 pin adapter. Thanks again for your advice.

Re: M700 M800 M900 Tower: upgrade power supply PSU (with a standard aftermarket supply)

2018-05-01, 21:43 PM

Sorry for bumping old thread but I am a novice and thought this may seem to be like my problem.

I installed a corsair vs650 to power a new gpu within a S510 10KW tower. The shop said connecting cables would be self explanatory but nothing fits. I have a 10 pin and another 4 pin on motherboard.

Am I correct in assuming I should use the 8 pin cable and "break it apart" (it is meant to break) and then order a 24 pin to 10 pin adapter and use on the largest cable (24 pin)? Safe to go then?

Thanks for any help I can get!

Correct.  From the link above:  "The Corsair PSU's do not have an 8 pin CPU power connector. They have a "4+4" connector that can be split. Separate the two halves and tie one back out of the way."

Re:M700 M800 M900 Tower: upgrade power supply PSU (with a standard aftermarket supply)

Reviewing this thread while preparing to replace the PSU on my M900. I realized that I need the 24-pin to 10-pin adapter. While Googling around to find one, I see some product reviews warn to use only 20 pins for Lenovos, or else risk frying the motherboard. My PSU has 24 pins, so I'm not quite sure what that means, or if it's something I need to worry about. (And if so, how does one convert a 24-pin plug to 20-pin?)

I saw the above link to the modDIY adapter cable, but the shipping time is too long for me. Does this one at Amazon seem like a reasonable option?

I'd appreciate any guidance that anyone can offer.

Yes, I expect the Amazon cable to work as well as the ModDIY cable.  And I'm not aware of anyone on this ThinkCentre forum frying their motherboard by using a power adapter cable.
