M710 Tiny drive specs?

2017-06-24, 1:59 AM

Does anyone know what the drive options/configuration is for the m710 Tiny? I saw in another thread that the m910 supports 3 drives (2 pcie, 1 sata). Is it the same for m710? I know they have different chipsets, so...

I ordered the m710 but it won't be here for another week or so. I'd love to find out that I can get 3 drives in there!

It turns out this was incorrect - while there is physical space for 2 nvme drives, there is only one socket. Now I wish I waited to order my SSDs!

Re: M710 Tiny drive specs?

Thank you!! How exciting - I thought there were only 1 SATA and 1 pcie slot until I recently saw a picture online :)

For anyone else reading this...there's a pic online that shows either the 710 Tiny or 910 Tiny. The pcie drives are located on the bottom of the PC, with a separate VENTED access hatch and directly next to another exhaust vent. They're not located between the SATA drive and the MoBo like they are on the 700/900.

I haven't seen any of this in person so please excuse me if I'm incorrect about anything, but from the research I've done it sure looks like a big improvement for pcie drive cooling. This is important to me as I'd like to try running audio sample libraries from a pcie drive (although I'm OK with Plan B: resorting to SATA for large file transfers).

This image is from Lenovo PS Ref and you can see the vented drive hatch:

This image I found online and claims to be either the M710 Tiny or M910 Tiny (same image for both) - again, another little vent near the pcie drives:

Thanks, Lenovo, for addressing the common thermal issue with pcie drives!!

Below is a photo from my M710. The pic above was from an online source that used a generic (M910) pic for both the M710 and M910.

You can see there are 2 spaces for nvme, but only one has the white and blue plastic 'slots' to mount a drive.

Strangely, I didn't open the package of the nvme drive I bought - I started to, but never cut the plastic tape/seal. So I may exchange it for a larger one.

Thanks for posting that. I saw the same configuration of my puchased M710 tiny 3 weeks ago and when I tried to posted my picture of the SSD/RAM slots, my posted got deleted.

I was wondering if a NVME socket can be installed easily in the M710 tiny because in the BIOS the additional NVME slot is listed but "not used". So I assume that the Chipset supports it.

I am surprised to know that the M910 tiny has the additional NVME socket. I thought it is the same as the M710 tiny. It is very frastruated for M710 tiny buyer to not know this difference from their spec sheets. It is Lenovo's fault to not make clear of the actual numbers of NVME slots in two models.

I agree, and share the disappointment - especially when you open the cover to the drive slots and see the space and "SSD 2" or whatever written there, all the necessary pins in the motherboard, just no pin-board connector.

I actually thought about adding a connector...it seems possible if you can solder 70-something tiny pins (x2), but that's way beyond my ability at this point. So I'm just accepting it...

Re: M710 Tiny drive specs?

I ordered the 512GB model thinking that the M710 tiny only has one NVME. I was actually a bit excited to know that there is at least a possibility to add another connector when I opened the back.

But the fact that Lenovo intended not to put the second connector in M710 tiny but in M910 tiny without specifying it makes me sick. These two are business models and require precision in the spec sheet.

Also, I want to share my speed test for the 512GB NVME drive used in M710 tiny, assuming same drive is used in M910 tiny.

You can see M710 uses a Toshiba TLC 512GB drive with model number THNSF5512GPUK. And the performance is acceptable but not superior. I attach my test result of crystaldiak mark and windows file copying for who may be interested. Notice that in the file copying test, speed drop significantly and this is a common phenomenon with NVMe drives except some of the top performers like Sammy Pro 960 and 950.

Maybe I am wrong, I don't think you need to soder all the connector pins, but just the two points that I red cycle in my picture below. However, I don't have such experience to be certain.
