M710q: No Network Connectivity After Reboot

2018-03-27, 15:19 PM

We have ThinkCentre M710q 10MR, many of them.  All are running Windows 10 on a corporate network with AD.

Sometimes, after a reboot, there is no network connectivity. Setting a static IP doesn't resolve the problem.

Rebooting two or three times fixes the problem.

Most PC's are connected to an Avaya or Polycom VoIP phone. Rebooting the phone does not often help (but sometimes does)

Disconnecting from the phone, or rebooting the phone, causes the Ethernet lights to go out, and the interface show no Ethernet cable connected.

Connecting to a wireless network *seems* fine, but more testing is needed.

Switching Environment is Cisco 2960-X, other devices do not seem affected.

HI,

I am also experiancing this issue on P320 desktops which were working fine upto late April.  A reboot will fix the issue for these desktop but so will also disabling and enabling the NIC card, have you tried this ?

The are running windows 10 and have the latest BOIS and NIC drivers.

I think i found the fix for this problem...

I downloaded the Lenovo System Update application, which downloads not only all of the latest drivers but also flash the BIOS to the latest update available. I think the upgrade to the BIOS did the trick because since then i rebooted the system more than 30 times and the problem has gone.

Try it and see if it works.

Unfortunately I have tried this on the P320 and this didn't solve my issue as I have the latest BIOS. I even tried disabling the power management through Windows on the NIC.

Same issue here with a couple hundred of these machines across a few clients.  BIOS update has not resolved the issue for us.  We're finding that a shut down then switch back on (cold boot) brings the NIC back to life.  A simple reboot rarely works.

We've also tried disabling Widnows 10 HiberBoot/Fast Startup 'feature' with no change.

Any other suggestions?

Hi,

I think we are seeing similar on the m910q. The issue is as you describe - WIndows 10 (1803) boots, shows initial logon screen with an "identifying" action occuring for the NIC. The machine will not successfully identify the network. Unplugging the cable and re-inserting does not help. Restarts might help, but we had more success with a shutdown/power on. We're using Cisco 3750E switches and these are in an AD environment.

We did multiple rounds of boot testing in two bench lab environments.

First environment was 16 machines, booted 12 times. The machines were all initially online and waiting - having been online for 12+ hours. First restart 8 out of 16 failed to identify the network. second restart 2 out of 16 failed, third restart, 1 out of 16 failed to identify. The 9 following boots were 100% successful.

Second environment was 31 machines, booted 5 times. This was a physically separate site, but like the first environment, these machines were all initially online and waiting - having been online for 12+ hours. First restart, 4 out of 31 had issues. Second restart, 1 out 31. Next three restarts were 100% successful.

I remain very puzzled as to why it gets better as our testing progresses, however this was only two rounds so I am not ready to jump to any conclusions.

We successfully PXE booted and loaded 125 machines with Windows 10. What is odd is that the Win10 SCCM OSD process reboots these at least 3 times during the build process, but we had 100% success with imaging.

Our BIOS is 04/20/2018, M1AKT36A ; I didn't want to update 100+ machines without a clear reason.

Any news? Anyone have a case with Lenovo?

EDIT: Our BIOS is 04/20/2018, M1AKT20A . I mis-typed that in the original message.

Also seeing this issue.  Running the current driver version for I219-V v. 12.17.8.9.  Switching over to wifi does connect.  Ethernet drops usually after an update and reboot.  A shutdown will normally kick the NIC back on.

Re: M710q: No Network Connectivity After Reboot

Hi, we recently updated 150 machines to the July 24, 2018 BIOS version M1AKT39A. We followed that with testing in our lab/bench spaces so we could bulk reboot and get stats. Our initial testing of hundreds of restarts, over multiple days, was promising. However, in the past two days random (M1AKT39A) machines have shown this issue again. It's truly bizarre.

1. Following a restart machine stuck "identifying network".

2. Rebooting 2+ times may correct this

3. Shutdown + power on does seem to correct this

Driver and BIOS updates have not eliminated this for random clients. I did do driver just to be on the latest version, but since a full shutdown seems to work I was leaning toward a BIOS level issue.

I am going to test with both the Lenovo build and Linux. Has anyone else experienced this with the Lenovo-supplied build? When I called for support they blamed our Windows 10 image and have not returned my calls following the initial ticket creation and trouble-shooting.
