M92p Tiny CPU options - installed Xeon E3-1265Lv2

I've got online very cheap my second M92P Tiny to later find out that it was "downgraded" from it's original i5 3470T to Pentium G2030. While the Pentium G2030 is fine for the tasks I plan to use the tiny, I am concerned with it's TDP of 55W vs 35 W on the original i5 CPU. So far it keeps fine, but I am concerned about long term usage,

as I plan to use it as small/quiet server and reliability is a must.

 

Besides the original i5 3470t, what other options I have?

Woud it accept a low power Xeon like E3-1265LV2 (45W TDP) or E3-1220LV2  (only 17W TDP!) or any other Xeon?

I will have probably use 3770T version because of its acceptable TDP value, but still abovementioned Xeons seem to be a bit cheaper, maybe because are older. Still, would any of them would work?

Well, an i7 3770T is almost twice the price of an Xeon E3-1265LV2, so I'd rather buy the Xeon..
Could someone confirm if that specific Xeon is going to work?

Today I received my Xeon E3-1265Lv2 (used, ebay, china) and want to report that it worked on M92p tiny!

Bios is latest.

It was a bit risky, but I had the following in mind: 

- this particular CPU is 45W TDP (stock i5-3470T is 35W).

- both are IvyBridge (in fact this xeon is very similar to I7-3770T), same family/revision/stepping, etc.

- the bios for M92p is the same as for ThinkStation E31 which supports E3-12xx series.

- this CPU was a lot cheaper than I7-3770T.

 

So I took the risk - and win.

 

I will eventually change the PSU from 65 to 95 W and will closely look at temperatures,

but given that G2030 is 55W TDP and it worked and did not overheat I think all will be fine.

 

Currently it runs linux (xen hypervisor) so I cannot post the usual cpu-z proof, but here is exceprt from dmesg:

Any chance you have a particular PSU model in mind?

I've been looking around Ebay for 90W PSU's but haven't found anything other than cheap looking chinese knock offs.

PS:

I am still with the original 65W supply and it's doing fine. I run two 3 VMs on that machine with variable load and it is running 24/7, only shutdown it for maintenance.

Can you report back your CPU idle and load temperature? Are you still using the stock heat sink (aluminum fin but no pipe) ?

Hi, at idle it stays cool, same as the i5, at higher load it can go as high as 70-75 (worst) deg C. Definitely higher than the i5, but still OK, nothing to worry about. Now I have two M92p tinies with e3-1265lv2 each running 3-4 VMs (Linux,Win7,Win10) under Xen and they all work 24/7, different load. Great micro servers, takes virtually no space, quiet and cool.

I know it's a pretty old post, but just to mention: I'm running a e3-1265Lv2 now with 16GB memory and it's a (mini) beast!! However, the system does get hot and the fans spin up very loud (I do a lot of code running and compiling). I looked at the screwholes for the heatsing on top of the CPU and was wondering if it's similar to some AMD cooler socket or not. I can compensate removing the top plate if some existing cooler can be put into the system replacing the current heatsink. Any sugestions?
