Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

I ordered my Tiny 720q with one 8GB stick. I have a 4GB stick that is the same spec that came out of a 2018 Mac Mini. So if I added a 4GB stick in the Tiny and it booted fine would I lose performance having slot #1 8GB of RAM and slot #2 4GB of RAM?

Re: Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

Hi Rod_B,

Greetings.

I would assume that there would be more gains running a total of 12 GB with the added ram.

You can initially measure the percentage of memory usage in task manager with multiple browser and application opened with 8GB checking CPU Z  for frequency then to compare it with the added 4GB. This would allow you to have measurable comparison with the performance.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

Thanks for the link. I ran CPU-Z and it shows Dual Channel for my RAM with 12GB total. DRAM Freq is 1197.1Mhz which looks correct. However I don't see a way to view each individual slot? NB Freq, not sure what that is, jumps around from 798MHz to 2792MHz.

I clicked on "Tools", then Clocks and it just list RAM Clock speed as 1197.13MHz.

That said, the system appears to be running fine. As I mentioned in my original comment, the memory specs for the Tiny M720q and the 2018 Mac Mini are identical. I upgraded the RAM in the 2018 Mac Mini and used one of the spare 4GB RAM SO-DIMMS.

Re: Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

Hi Rod_B,

Greetings.

CPU Z would also have option to select on each slot but I believe it is all ok since both RAM works as one now having the same specifications.

To check on the performance as mentioned, you can see task manager under performance tab the memory percentage. Compare how each (8GB vs 12GB) with same open tabs and applications. Lesser percentage would show better demand handling.

Increasing RAM capacity would help you open online informations faster, more browser tabs opens faster too. If you have any editing video tool, work would be faster processing the changes. Such are the most obvious advantages.

Regards

Re: Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

Beware of memory with Micron chips:  M710q Tiny: Memory RAM upgrade to 32 GB = Shutdown in minutes. Solved: use Kingston memory

Re: Memory Upgrade Question, Tiny M720q

Oh, thanks for the info but my RAM is only 12GB (8+4GB) and the spare 4GB SO-DIMM I removed from my 2018 Mac Mini didn't say who the chip mfg was. However my M720q has been running just fine before and after the memory upgrade.

Yes, but in case you need to upgrade further, and for anyone reading this thread.  As the consequences are dire.
