Print error code 0x80040154

For the last month or so, I have not been able to print PDF files or web pages, as this error comes up on the print dialog box (black background) as an 'unexpected configuration error'. 

Any advice? I have gone through updating all systems, checking online protection not the culprit.

  • What version of Windows? 
  • What type of printer?     
  • Have you tried reinstalling your printer software?
  • Have you run the Printer troubleshooter from Settings app > Update & security > Troubleshoot (assuming Windows 10)
  • Does it affect all browsers, or just MS Edge?

If this only happens in Microsoft Edge, you might also check to see if there is a a PrintConfiig.dll file located in the following folder

 

C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3

 

If not, check the folders that begin and end with {   } up one level in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\  and see if any of them contain a copy of the PrintConfig.dll file, and if so, copy and past that file into the C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 folder, reboot and try printing again.

 

The current version of PrintConfig.dll on my Windows 10 (1903 May Update) system is version 0.3.18362.1  dated  03/18/2019 is attached below.   If you are missing the file, and are on the same 1903 version of Windows, you might try it.
