ThinkCentre A55: Serial port 2 (M50/M52)

2008-01-29, 14:17 PM
I have a Lenovo A55  -  9641
on the motherboard is a second serial port option (com2) Pins

How do i connect to this....

There 12 pins on the motherboard
where normally there would be 10 with one missing
for DB9 cable to be connected

If anyone knows the pin combination or which cable i need
or is it possible to use a serial cable from another machine

Any suggestions will be preciated....

Thanx

Are you sure that is not for extra USB ports?

I don't have an A55, but if its like the M50/M52 models (which seems highly likely) there was a ribbon cable available from IBM that plugged into the planar COM2 header connector and had a DB9 connector on the other end, for mounting in a punch-out hole in the case back panel.

I have no idea what the pinout is on the planar connector but the ribbon cable was "flat " (no crossovers), so I suspect that pinout of the planar header was arranged to support a straightforward crimp at both ends of the ribbon cable, so you could probably work it out the planar pinout with a bit of concentration.

Cheers,

Bill

I sure it's com2 it's written below the pins on the motherboard

I read somewhere on some HP motherboard that it might be to enable the com2  by shorting pin11 and pin12
i wont try that....:smileywink:

could be safe to connect a cable to the motherboard
with another serial cable

i mean what will happen if the cable were supposed to be a crossed Serial cable
and i use a straight, normally you would think that it just would'nt work...eh

since some cable from port to hardware could be crossed/straight so it should be safe from
this.....
