TC M720s: lost audio to speakers, drivers gone (W10 Pro)

2020-04-07, 22:44 PM

All of a sudden my sound disappeared, just from one time to another. Using external loudspeakers. As far as I know there was no update in between. The computer was started all time. What I can see in Device manager "Intel High Definition DSP" lost the driver in properties it says:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There are no compatible drivers for this device.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Tried to reinstall all Intel drivers I found in Software. No change. Where can I find the proper driver? Using speakers all day and had to change into my old laptop...

I also lost audio since yesterday - no windows update - scanned system with Lenovo Bridge, no errors - "Intel High Definition DSP" indicates no compatible drivers for this device. I believe that Realtek drivers were originally installed. I had to connect an external speaker to get audio

  1. Check to see if there was a Windows Update (view History) around the time the audio broke, some can apply without a restart.  Updates can be undone.   2. If the system did a driver change, a Restore Point may have been created (these can be viewed), and you can roll it back before the change.

No updates seen in history and unfortunately no restorepoints working. Reinstalled the computer (keeping files) and the driver was in the same (missing) state and still are. I have System Restore active but no Restore Points except the one I made myself now. Seems a lot like we have experienced the same problem as it was on the same day and time(?)

Solved the problem! :-) Yes, I will tell how... and unfortunately when I started to write this it failed without telling, did the procedure again and it worked, for how long...? Don't know

Open Device manager -> highlight "Intel High Definition DSP" -> View -> Choose Devices by Connection -> Highlight "Intel (R) SMart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Device (should be one level above the device)-> Rightclick -> Properties -> Driver -> Uninstall Device (if you get the choice "Delete Software" mark it... -> Restart  At this point it started to work but failed and I did it again and rolled back driver and now it works... up for 5 minutes anyway. Will fill in if it continues to fail after a restart. Edit: Still works after 15 minutes and after restart :-)

2 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too

Happened once again after yesterdays update.

Reduced the solution to highlight "Intel high definition DSP" in Device manager then View -> By connection -> Highlight one level higher "Intel Smart sound..." and delete -> Mark delete files -> Restart and the sound is working.

Hi there!

I'm having the same problem (it started 2 days ago).....so thanks for this solution!

However the audio works for 10/15 minutes and then disappears again, and I have to restart the PC.

Do you think there is the possibility of finding a definitive solution to the problem? Will we have to wait for a new Windows/Lenovo update?

Today I attended a video conference and I had to disconnect, restart the PC and then reconnect every 10/15 minutes!!!   :)

thanks

I've got pretty much the same experience. It's possible to make the changes without a restart, but if the restart is made, the configuration stays, if not it fall back to previous state in some minutes. So my experience is to delete the "Intel Smart Sound..." configuration (and mark delete files in the box) then restart and the Realtek audio will be active after startup.
This "Intel Smart Sound" driver tends to show up in the notification field saying it need a restart but doesn't install it self on top of Realtek.
I haven't found a solution to inactivate that driver, so as long as it works with this kind of work around I'm fine but not satisfied.

The following solution worked on 2 separate Lenovo ThinkCentre M720s devices:

  • Open Device Manager,
  • Highlight 'Intel High Definition DSP',
  • Click 'View' tab,
  • Click 'Devices by connection',
  • Right-click 'Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel (R)) SST Audio Controller',
  • Click 'Properties',
  • Click 'Driver' tab,
  • Click 'Roll Back Driver' button,
  • Click 'Previous version of the driver seemed more reliable' radio button,
  • Click 'Yes' button,
  • Click 'Close' button, and
  • Monitor 'Sound, video and game controllers' devices in Device Manager for any changes.

Hope that the above fix works for anyone else too.
