ThinkCentre E73 Tower Hangs on reboot after CPU upgrade

2018-10-31, 20:12 PM

Hello

I upgraded the CPU from a i5 4440S to a i7 4790S which was listed a supported CPU.

Now everything works fine EXCEPT rebooting. When i shut down the machine and start it boots normally. But when i reboot it the screen stays black and the machine does nothing and i have to hold the power button to turn it off and then it boot normally.

So far i tried:

Ran prime95 to check stability of the new CPU. All fine.

Ran the build-in hardware checks. All fine

Did a completly clean instal of Windows 10.

Reset the BIOS by taking out the battery.

This issue is driving me up the wall and i never had anything like this.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: ThinkCentre E73 Tower Hangs on reboot after CPU upgrade

I have exactly the same problem with some of our Lenovo E73 computers.

Our Small Form Factor E73s will happily take a i5-4570 CPU, but an i5-4590 CPU will cause the reboot failure you experienced.  The same i5-4590 CPU works perfectly well in a Dell Optiplex 9020 (which is of similar age to the Lenovo E73).

And one of our Small Form Factor E73's would not reboot when we installed an i5-4460s, despite the i5-4460s being a supported CPU!  In fact, I took the i5-4460s CPU out of a Tower E73, where it worked perfectly well.

So the SFF E73 doesn't like the i5-4590, but likes the i5-4570, despite the only difference between the two being a slight speed bump (according to Intel's website).

And the SFF E73 doesn't like the i5-4460s, despite it being a supported CPU.  The Tower E73 likes the i5-4460s.

We have updated the BIOS recently.  We're on 1.91 and 1.93 for the Tower and SFF (certainly newer than the age of the E73).

Thank you

The i5-4590S was not a factory supported processor.  Did you update the BIOS prior to installing the i5-4460S?  As that processor was introduced 6 mths after the i5-4440S, if the BIOS was prior to the microcode being added, it would not have been recognized.

Re: ThinkCentre E73 Tower Hangs on reboot after CPU upgrade

Hello BiggAl and thank you for your reply.

Although the i5-4590 isn't a supported CPU, I expected it to work in the E73 models simply because the i5-4570 did (please note I'm referring to the full i5-4570 and i5-4590, not the S variants).

I did upgrade the Lenovo E73 Tower to BIOS v1.93, dated 04/30/19 and it still wouldn't reboot correctly with the i5-4570, so I had to use the default i5-4460s instead.

However, our Lenovo E73 Small Form Factor with BIOS v1.91 reboots correctly with an (officially unsupported) i5-4570.

Also please note that it's not a matter of the Lenovo E73's recognizing the newer CPU; it's the fact the Lenovo computer will happily cold boot with the newer CPU, but does not warm boot successfully with it installed.  Any attempt to reboot either from within BIOS (eg after a BIOS settings change) or from within Windows will cause the screen to go black and the compter will fail to boot until it is hard powered off then back on again.

Thank you
