Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

OK .. also you must update BIOS to latest ... I did this by buring a CD and loading via the computer's DVD drive.  So disconnect SSD and reconnect DVD & HDD .. then in BIOS settigns, set boot first from CD/DVD.  I suspect on this machine may well not upport for BIOs load from USB.  Then retry the 4GB moduels.  Regards

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

OK thats good .. so I think the memory you have may not be campatable with this model.

OT36566 appears to be used for Lenovo H520e & H520g for which I found the manual at https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/desktop_pub/lenovo_h520g_hmm_20130903.pdf.  Anyway the manual says its ... 4GB PC3-12800 1600MHz UDIMM.

The memory I purchased is 0A36527 (or 89Y9224) and this is listed at https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd010161 and this is spec'd as 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 UDIMM.

The OT36566 is 1600Mhz but I think M58 can only support 1333Mhz .. so I suspect your sticks do not work as they are too fast and the timing is wrong for the M58.

As for Windows 10 support, it works well although I have had some problems recognising other computers on the LAN.  But this is a common problem in Windows 10 and so I'm not sure if it releates to the M58 hardware.

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Thanks for the research.

No, it seems that the M58 does support 1600mhz since Crucial after scanning my pc offers me this:

https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkcentre-m58-(type-6239,-7244,-7355,...)

I'll give a try to W10 then Smiley Happy

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Yes so the crucial 1600Mhz is compatible but I suspect it runs at 1333MHz which I think is the limit of the machine.  The bottom line is that some memory does work and some does not and the crucial 1600Mz probably does work .. but you bought a different brand of 1600MHz I recall from your photos ... and there is no guarantee that all 1600MHz sticks will work in these machines.

I recall reading that Lenovo are sensitive to memory timing (probably to get maximum performance) and so you have to check the model is compatible.

Also I note that the Crucial is out of stock of this memory and I think the issue is that they no longer make a compatible memory ... and that is what I found 2 years ago ... and thats why I searched online for the precise memory that Lenovo recomended .. but I did have to pay about $20-$25 US per stick as I recall.  Regards

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Yes the brand of the new ones is Micron with Lenovo sticker on the other side.

I didn't manage to find if this exact ref is compatible with the M58, which means so far I still don't know if it's incompatiblity issue or modules not fonctionning.

It looks like I can actually order from the Crucial website the 1600mhz (at least from my country) but the idea was to get second hand which are cheaper.

I did call Lenovo support but the guy had basically no clue at all.

If I don't manage to find second ones compatible I'll go with those ones, but might as well spend less if possible.

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Alright, so I've got some updates.

I received this RAM module (second hand as well). Sorry, that's a french website but you can at least see the specs: https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00109553.html

No issue with this one compared to the 2 other ones.

Here are some HWinfo with 7gb total: https://imgur.com/a/oRKBDXU

The PC still uses 18% physical memory when idle, isn't that a lot?

I tried to put back the other 2 4gb modules (14gb=4gbx3+2gb) but they still don't work with a memory size error at the start.

Is it weird that Windows doesn't recognize them but Speccy and HWinfo see them?

https://imgur.com/a/tBS9XLV

Finally, I recovered from another old PC a geforce 7300 LE and a wifi card (realtek 8185 extensible 802.11b/g wireless device)

- Is there any interest EXCEPT when using a second monitor to install the GC?

- When I tried it, the PC was much noisy (fan) and I could only have a display image when connected to the geforce. If I connect the monitor to the normal vga plug (with the geforce in), the monitor doesn't work.

- Regarding the wifi card (actually not important to have it but I guess it could be of use someday), I installed the latest driver for it (2010) but it doesn't seem to work, even if the router is next to the PC: https://imgur.com/a/OarsnUb

It doesn't have an external antena, I don't know if it's supposed to have one. Any idea why?

Thanks Smiley Happy

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

1. 18% for 7GB is good

2. Noisy fan means there is a hardware fault.  You have to install memory in pairs and of same type within each pair

3. Graphocs rad only useful for games or graphic intensive programs.  But this PC does not support latest MS graphic standrds so not much good for recent games

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Hi Richard,

Yeah I tried all combinations for the RAM and nothing changed. Recognized on Hwinfo and Speccy but not by Windows.

I guess I'm just gonna give up and resell the ones not working.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Help for RAM & SSD Lenovo M58

Some updates:

For the RAM that was not working, I gave up and re-sent it to the seller.

I received my SSD (evo 850 256go) and installed it.

But there is some stuff which seems wrong, even with Sata 2:

- it takes around 35 seconds to boot, which seems long for a SSD

- Crystaldiskmark results are kinda weak; I checked other benchs of the same SSD on sata 2 and they had better results. I tried switching sata port but no change. I ran it in safe mode and it got slighly better results, but I guess that's normal (?)

- it looks like the SSD is in AHCI mode but Samsung Magician says it isn't. I tried everything about this, the registry method and so on but no change.

Here is some photos: https://imgur.com/a/pk2klZu

Would you guys have any idea regarding this?

Thanks.
