ThinkCentre M710 M720 M910 M920 s & t: how to add SSD (M.2 card, PCIe, SATA, HDD)

2017-10-12, 12:05 PM

Hi all :-)

So I have bought a Lenovo thinkcentre M910s and wanted an extra harddrive.

The store I bought my M910s told me to buy following parts:

4XH0L08579       Lenovo ThinkStation M.2 SSD Adapter

WDS100T1B0B WD Blue PC SSD WDS100T1B0B - Solid State Drive - 1 TB

But it will not work? I have tried both PCIe 4x and 16x but the drive does not show up in bios or disk management. I have update bios.

Do I have the wrong adapter??

Best regards
~ninatech~

Re: Thinkcentre m910s with M2 SSD adapter and 1 TB SSD won't work?

That SSD card has a SATA interface, you need PCIe.   Lenovo owners seem to prefer Samsung PCIe M.2 SSD cards (and is an oem supplier), you can search above for info on the different card models.

Okey.

But can I not use this card in my computer? It was quite expensive..

Re: Thinkcentre m910s with M2 SSD adapter and 1 TB SSD won't work?

No, the M.2 slot does not support SATA, and there is a huge performance difference between SATA and PCIe SSD.   Additionally, M910s and M910t have a M.2 PCIe slot for storage built-in, so the PCIe SSD adapter card (4XH0L08579) is not necessary.

The store I bought my M910s told me to buy following parts:

4XH0L08579       Lenovo ThinkStation M.2 SSD Adapter

WDS100T1B0B WD Blue PC SSD WDS100T1B0B - Solid State Drive - 1 TB

Since the store had you buy incorrect components, I suggest you take both back, and get a correct M.2 PCIe SSD card to install into the built-in slot.

Re: Thinkcentre m910s with M2 SSD adapter and 1 TB SSD won't work?

2017-10-13, 18:38 PM

One more point, however...

The M910s does contain a built-in M.2 SSD socket on the motherboard, designed for the direct connection of an M.2 PCIe NVMe (not SATA) storage SSD card.

However the location of this socket on the motherboard is right down near the corner of the motherboard so that insertion of the M.2 card into the socket would have most of the physical card projecting off of the motherboard and out over the metal chassis.  In order to physically support and restrain the projection of the M.2 card, Lenovo has a plastic support bracket available which snaps onto the indentations right in the metal chassis exactly where the M.2 card projects.

If you had bought the M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage card from Lenovo with the M910s, this plastic mounting adapter bracket would have come pre-installed from the factory.  Since your M910s was not purchased to include an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage card from Lenovo and you want to buy one after-market yourself, you must also purchase this ThinkCentre M.2 SSD Kit adapter bracket (Part number: 4XF0P01011).  It is REQUIRED in order to install an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage card in the M910s (and M910t as well).  The parts kit also includes two press-down plastic fastening pins (in lieu of two fastening screws) which secures the outer-edge of the M.2 card down to the plastic bracket projection on the chassis.  The M.2 card contains a half-circle cutout at its outer-edge designed for use by a fastening screw or fastening pin in order to hold it firmly to the mounting bracket or a matching screw hole in the motherboard (if one existed).

You will then be able to install an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage card, e.g. Samsung 960 EVO (250GB, 500GB or 1TB) or more expensive and somewhat faster Samsung 960 Pro card.   Mod edit - Sept 2019:  Samsung has update their SSD product line, and the 970 Evo and Pro are the current products.

The M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage drive connector socket on the M910s motherboard is (18) in the picture below, down in the lower right corner of the motherboard. The second M.2 socket to its right is for use by an optional M.2 PCIe WiFi card which if installed would also project out over the edge of the motherboard and over the metal chassis, and require external physical support. The required mounting adapter plastic ThinkCentre M.2 SSD Kit part 4XF0P01011 that I mentioned above actually has TWO support slots on it, so that you can potentially install your own M.2 storage SSD card as well as an M.2 WiFi card, and have both cards physically supported and secured firmly to the plastic mounting bracket part.

This helped me too

Does this also apply to M900? or only M910 does NOT need that adapter anymore and M900 still needs it?

This does not apply to the M900 SFF and Tower, they require a PCIe SSD adapter.

Do you know if the adapter in the first post is really also supported on the m900? Because here are only following listed: P310, P320, P410, P910 (in the case of the high profile which I would need)

Yes, that is the correct adapter for a M900, see post # 8 of this thread:  M900 SFF & Tower: how to boot from M.2 SSD (PCIe, NVMe)
