ThinkCentre M73 PSU, is it standard TFX form factor PSU?

2016-04-15, 22:46 PM

I'm considering getting a ThinkCentre M73 as a network appliance that I hope will run for at least 10 years. This is actually replacing a Dell OptiPlex G1, which has been running for 15 years non-stop. Although the Dell has worked great so far, I've always been aware that Dell uses a proprietary pin-out for the PSU in this Optiplex, so replacing the PSU if it fails is not straight forward. I didn't learn about this proprietary PSU issue until the machine was already up and running or I might have made a different choice.

Now that I'm a bit more enlightened, before I purchase a M73, I want to know if the PSU is a standard TFX form factor or am I limited only to Lenovo PSUs?

You should be able to use a TFX form factor PSU. However, you need a converter cable to convert the 20/24 pin connector to a 14 pin connector. This cable can be easly be purchase from EBAY or Amazon (cost 5-20 depending on supplier). I know that there are 300W PS and maybe 350W.

Since TFX supplies get refreshed far less than ATX supplies, check the specs and details for Haswell or low-power-sleep-state compliance, if allowing the system to sleep when not in use is important to you.

Haswell power supply compatibility

I measured my ps today and the exterior dimensions (I did not check mounting holes of the ps) match the TFX12V standard. Howexer this ps is only 240W and has limited connectors. I believe Seasonic makes a 300W and 350W that could work. However, you will need the conversion cables I mention.

Also, if you plan on adding a SSD, you need an mounting adapter of some type.
