Thinkcenter M900 towers is not compatible with GTX1060

2017-12-13, 5:51 AM

Hi

I recently wanted to upgrade the graphics, and I could not find too much info online about whether GTX1060 graphics would be compatiable with this model or not. So I plan to just try. Apparently, zotac gtx 1060 is much thicker than the slot allowed. It physically does not fit. I read online saying the tower model power supply should be OK though.

I searched online about the M900 specs, the best graphics it stated supported was GT720 which wasimpossible to run some 3D games. I am very ocasionally gamer, however, I still would like to try some popular games. This time is play unknown battleground.

I bought think center because I expect a reliable and long lasting desktop. Now I am very regreting of it because the best graphics it would support is not even close to support such a game. I looked at options to connect to an external GPU, however it would cost so much that I should just buy a new computer.

Anyways, it is bad day for me. Please let me know if you have some idea what I can do about it.

thanks

yic

A GTX 1060 would require a power supply upgrade, and be a shorter model:  Upgrade-Graphics-card-on-new-M900-Tower

The best card possible for a M900 Tower with a factory 250w power supply is an overclocked full height GTX 1050 Ti,  but one that does not require a 6-pin PCIe supplimental power connector, and is shorter in length.  Such as this single fan EVGA model:  04G-P4-6253-KR.

Re: Thinkcenter M900 towers is not compatible with GTX1060

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. I would like to follow up a little about it.

1. regarding to power issues, I found this from m900 specs:

Power supply
• 400-watt automatic voltage-sensing power supply
• 250-watt automatic voltage-sensing power supply,

I also read online saying 400W should be OK to run GTX1060. So do I really need to upgrade the PSU? Sorry, i am not a expert about it. Am i missing something here?

2. Please refer to attached picture m900_marked.jpg.

The red marked is the pcie slot for the graphics. The blue is the slot for the connector ports. I feel even with your suggested  04G-P4-6253-KR, it is still too wide to fit. First, the blue marked slot is so narrow. So is there a way to work around it? Should I break the slot to have wider opening? Secondly, there a green marked PCB, which occupies another pcie slot, and it is so close to the graphics slot that I feel any graphics with fan can not fit into. I do not even know what that is, I guess it is the wifi module. So, do you happen to know what that PCB is? Can I take it out, or move to another place?

Since you gave me some hope in your last reply, I still want to put more efforts on it.

A. I am more towards to just use the GTX1050, it seems the easiest way and should be sufficient, but I need answer to my question 2.

B. I wonder can I use pcie extender cable to connect the pcie slot, and then connect the other end to the graphics which I will leave outside of desktop case. So I actually make it external. If that could be a option, then i may need to replace my PSU?

I highly appreciated your help already, and I would appreciate more if you could bear a bit more with my questions.

thanks

yichao

The GTX 1060 requires 6-pin PCIe power connection, which the stock PSU in the M900 tower does not provide.  So you absolutely must upgrade the PSU at the very least, even assuming there was physical room for the double-wide card, if you wanted to and could install that card.

I can attest to the fact that double-wide cards (such as the 4GB DDR5 EVGA GTX 1050ti SC) fit without a problem in older M93p tower cases, as well as new M910t tower cases (which are smaller than the M93p tower).  I have installed this very card in both M93p tower as well as M910t tower machines, with no PSU upgrade, and everything works perfectly.  The GTX 1050ti is a low-power Pascal card which does not require additional PCIe power, and the 280W standard PSU in these machines is perfectly adequate.

And the standard spacing of PCIe x16 and adjacent x1 slots on motherboards will support both single-slot and double-slot (at least the single-fan EVGA GTX 1050ti) cards with no problem whatsoever.  It's only a length limitation that might be a problem for other cards, but the single-fan EVGA GTX 1050ti is superbly "short" and so is no problem for the swing-down drive bay assembly in the M93p and M910t.  And its double-slot width again is a perfect fit for the Lenovo standard motherboard expansion slot layout.

1.  Also according to the specs, the 400w supply is "available only via special bid".  Did you special order yours with a 400w supply?

2.  You can move the card indicated in green into the longer slot below it (PCI x1 card --> x16 slot), creating the space required for the "double-wide" graphics card described in the post above.

I installed the same card, that I just got yesterday, have not tried any games or anything yet, what has been your experience with the 1050 Ti in the M900? Did you have to upgrade the power supply? If yes, how did you do that? Can you help please?

There is no need to upgrade the PSU in an M900 tower.  Stock 250W PSU is fine.

As is shown in the PSREF for the M900 tower, the PCIe x16 expansion slots provide 75W of power, which is the TDP rating for the GTX 1050ti card.  As it turns out if you're not stressing/gaming, normal usage is actually about half of that. Worst case, 75W is available.

Should be no problem for you no matter what.
