Windows XP SP3 not a valid Win32 application??? Help please

I have an A50 which I recently restored to factory condition.  I have since performed windows update and installed Autocad, Lotus Notes, MS Office 2003 Pro and IBM iSeries Access.  I now have to install Windows XP SP3, and it won't go.  I've tried using Windows update, and it won't install, so i tried downloading the standalone and installing, and I get the error message:

"WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe is not a valid Win32 aplication", and then closes

How can I fix this?

Re: Windows XP SP3 not a valid Win32 application??? Help please

Have you tried with your Antivirus software disabled? Also I know it shouldn't (how many times have I said that!) have an effect but is your Hard drive formatted NTFS? Lastly, when I went to SP3 the machine requested power off and went thru several updates during shutdown, did you complete this sequence...if not then the original SP3 download may have only partially completed.

OK, running out of suggestions now....try this page

Then one last suggestion, make sure the BIOS is up to date, not sure when the M50 was released  but the original BIOS may need updating.

Re: Windows XP SP3 not a valid Win32 application??? Help please

Hey Amace,

In your original post, you mentioned that you had performed a windows update.  This should have installed all of the security updates contained in SP3.  Service Pack 3 contains all the security updates released since SP2 and if you've performed a windows update, I can't see why you'd need to install SP3.  SP3 does contain some 'functionality' updates, but these can be installed separately.  For further info, have a look at Microsoft's own SP3 overview at their 'Download Centre'.  There's a rather useful document there that details the functionality updates that can be installed separately.  It is called 'Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3.pdf'.

I also note that you have downloaded the standalone.  The standalone download is a ridiculously large file (580 MB).  Check that you have all of the file - I suspect that the download is either incomplete or has errors.  Let us know, though.

That apears to be the problem.  I tried downloading it again and it worked fine.  But that still doesn't explain why it wouldn't work with Windows Update.  however, I now have SP3
