m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

Hello,

I have a Lenovo M58p Model 6137CG3 with 3GB and a Core 2 Duo at 3.0Ghz with the latest bios firmware.

My question is, can I replace the processor with a  Core 2 Quad Q9650 Processor 3.0GHz  ?

Also, the memory, I would like to upgrade it to at least 8gb if not 16gb...  The motherboard have 4 memory slot, can I use 4 sticks of  4GB PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 UDIMM ??

Is that possible?

Edit: In case that the processor can be replaced, do I need to replace also the fan cooler?

Thanks in advance.

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70986

it doesn't list the Q9xxx CPU in the above list.

i think from memory it can only support 4 sticks of 2 gigs for a maximum of 8 gigs.

There is only fan kit listed in the above, which is the:

Intel 95W/65W heatsink kit, no fan grill 43N9897

so i suspect you can use it for up to 95 w tdp cpu.

-----------------------------------

Had a look at another document, this time it liswts the Q9xxx CPU as been supported on this a model of M58p.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70986

I would assume that the Q9xxx should be supported, but can't say with 100% certainty.

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

Thanks for your reply.

I think i found different information.

Released on 13 Apr 2011

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/46r4780.pdf

Chapter 10. FRU lists 437

Says that it support Microprocessor, Q9650 Yorkfield 3.00GHZ 1333FSB 12MB VT, TXT E-0

FRU #46R8642

At intel website:http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/q45/q45-overview.htm

Supports the Intel® Core™2 Duo and Intel® Core™2 Quad processors with Intel® Virtualization Technology◊1, and Intel® Celeron® processor.

About the memory, in the changelog file of the bios update it says that it now support 4gb memory sticks.

Changes for 5CKT67A/5CJT67A:     1. Support 4GB DIMMs.

Note: Only DDR3 SDRAM DIMMs can be used.(this info is on the above pdf.)

What do you guys think? does anyone have tried this?

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

i haven't heard anyone trying it. So i guess either you wait for confirmation from someone (which is going to take sometimes or never) OR try this yourself.

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

try are probably not going to know more about it then what they can find on the document that you have searched for. But you can try and see what happens.

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

Found out that it is compatible but I look at the twin brother X3370!  It cheaper and lowers the chances that it have been overclocked.  I decide to try to buy a second hand CPU for once.  Talked it over with a friend and that all he buys!

Hope Lenovo is loosing it's bios so the X3380 works or I will be out a couple of big bills.

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

I upgraded my M58P from a E8400 to a Q9650.   It faster on some operations; but it not that much faster in general.  I wasted $330 to find this out!  I think that if you are running many applications at the same time; that where the Quad type CPU kick in; but I just using mostly IE brower sessions and they can be handled by the Duo Core 2 CPU fine.

It is a little faster in general but I would go out and buy the Quad at the same clock speed.  I just was not thinking right!

Re: m58p Max CPU and memory capacity

Has anyone tried to use 16gb?

Lenovo docs said 8gb as max ram but Intel states 16gb on DDR2@800 for the Q45 chipset amd 8gb max on DDR@1066; plus, the latest bios allows to use 4gb sticks
