BSOD WDF_VIOLATION when connected to dock

2021-01-12, 17:24 PM

I have a number of Lenovo laptops in my office, all connected to USBc-Gen 2 Docks (Lenovo P/N 40AS0090US) that frequently give a BSOD when connected to the dock, showing WDF_VIOLATION.  The Minidump indicates the issue is with a Realtek Lan Driver.  Is anyone aware of a solution?

Hi spazztastic!

Greetings,

Just to make sure we're on the same page here, what is the model or machine type model of your laptop? When did this problem start? Any changes or any udpates installed before the issue came up?

Things to try:
1. Run the Lenovo Vantage app check for updates then install all available updates.

2. Check for Windows pending updates and install it

Let us know how it goes.

I am experiencing the exact same issue with the latest version of Windows 10.

Upon opening Lenovo Vantage & Windows Update, there are no updated available. The docking station firmware is up to date as well.

The error in the minidump file relates to rtump64x64.sys. Time stamp 13.42:25 Friday 30 October 2020

I have multiple machines all experiencing the same issue when connected to the dock.  I have an X1 Carbon with this issue.  I have an E590 with this issue.  I have multiple T14s with this issue.

All are running Windows 10 2004 build, all are connected to a USB-C Gen 2 dock when this issue occurs. All the updates are applied to these machines.  All show the same error.

More infos and affected systems in this thread:

I have already submitted a full kernel dump of one of our systems.

Hope this will be fixed soon, because we have a lot of affected systems.

You can try uninstalling the ethernet driver under the device manager and restart the computer. If the issue persists, delete the ethernet driver and reinstall it from the support site manually: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en

If the issue is the same, install the driver of the docking station and the firmware update as well after that. You can get it here; https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/acc500106-thinkpad-usb-c-dock-gen-2-overview-and-service-parts

For Enterprise Deployments, including Enterprise Firmware tools, it's found on the link above as well.

Let us know how it goes.

Can you remove all peripherals before reinstalling the driver? If the issue is the same, try booting to safe mode and delete the ethernet driver and Bluetooth driver from there.

If the issue is the same, perform a system restore on a date wherein the laptop was working fine.

I too am experiencing the same issue. I've updated windows, I've updated all drivers, firmware, and BIOS.  However end user reports BSODs every few days when connected to the usb-c Gen 2 docking station . When disconnected from the doc it has zero issues. As this thread points out, a couple of people reported their mini dumps and it seems to be something with the real tech NIC.  I've just set the EU's X1 carbon to produce mini dumps. So as soon as they report a BSOD, I'll check it out and confirm if its the same.

I've done all this.  I run an IT department.  We just switched away from HP to Lenovo.  We know when we're seeing a major issue with a single common component in all the systems.  FIX THE DRIVER.
