Boot without dock

2015-01-11, 11:04 AM

Hi community,

I recently bought my new E555 Thinkpad. I put Windows 8.1 on it, and installed the Lenovo update-thingi to install all the correct drivers.

In the Hardware-Manager from windows I now have no unknown hardware. (BIOS is also up-to-date)

Now to thr problem:

Whenever I try to start up the NB without the docking-station (real DS with OneLink), it runs by the BIOS and then freezes with just a black screen. No error message, no nothing.

When I connect the DS (even when no additional hardware is connected to it, just the dock itself) the NB will start up normally.

Shifting around the boot-devide-order changes nothing whatsoever. What I can do is to boot from CD/DVD, even when the dock is not connected.

I have no clue, what seems to be the problem...

Update:

I reinstalled Win8.1 and booting is no problem with or without dock UNTIL a certain Windows-Update. A couple of updates make no trouble, but after one wave of updates, the problem occurs and the Laptop does not load windows, when not docked. Even if the Laptop was never before connected to the dock.

Does anyone else have that problem?

Another Update:

Any (not necessarily bootable) USB-device, connected while booting will do the job. If any USB-Stick is connected to the NB while booting, it will load windows even without the dock.

Either the BIOS or Windows seem to insist on scanning at least one USB-device (no, the boot-order n the BIOS does not say that) and THEN try to load windows... well after discovering this, I can't say, I am less confused..

And yet another update:

I returned the Notebook and got another one. Installed windows => no prob, installed all updates => no prob => installed all drivers => no prob

Installed BIOS-Update => no booting without USB-storage!! WTH?! I did not change the BIOS-settings at all, even resetting the settings does not help.

It is the BIOS-Version itself... Can one undo a BIOS-Update?
