E14 with AMD RX 640 - multiple monitor detection fails

2020-06-11, 9:42 AM

Hello, I have a E14 hooked to a TB3 dock with 2 attached external Dell monitors on HDMI.  The intel GPU recognises both monitors and works well with internal monitor + external monitors enabled.  So a three screen setup as I was used to on my old TP440s.

The AMD RX doesnt do anything in the default setup (I was a bit surprised that only the Intel GPU does all the work).  No real AMD drivers (not even the light ones with AMD control center) were installed on default setup.  Seems a bit strange to me.

In order to force the AMD GPU to work, I disabled the Intel GPU, and restarted.

Relying only on the the AMD RX card, the system only works with the internal monitor and finds there are no external monitors attached.

All drivers have been updated several times, via the AMD site, via Lenovo Vantage app, via the Lenovo Service Brigde.  Pro drivers, Game drivers, Light drivers, no drivers and fresh dedection of hardware, ... You name it.  I really tried it all.  Nothing helps.

So don't you suggest to update the drivers... ;-)

Any idea?

What's the purpose of an extra graphics card, if its doesn't support multiple monitor setup?

Hi

E14 does not support Thunderbolt3 Gen1 dock(model: 40AC, 40AC0135WW) but support Thundebolt3 Gen2 dock(model: 40AN, 40ANY230WW)

So what's your thunderbolt3 dock model? 40AC or 40AN? Thanks!

It's a 40AN and the 3 monitor setup works fine under the Intel graphics card, but not under the AMD RX640.   Maybe I'm seeing this wrong, and is the RX 640 only supposed to support the Intel GP. Don't know.

Hello, do you know would it work on Linux? I've tried kernel version (5.13) and display link driver, but still no lock, all the usb/audio/ethernet ports are fine, but no DP/HDMI.

Hi

E14 does not support Linux OS as well, so we cannot guarantee that functionality works in Linux. Thanks.

Thank you for quick response, much appreciate! Yeah, I know it is officially not guaranteed to be supported, but there only two things not working well right now: Validity Sensor (but there patch allowed, so I'm going to use that one, so not a problem at all) and connecting monitors through Display Port in USB-C dock station, which is very nice to have for me. Do you know any other Thinkpad models with similar configuration (i.e. cpu) and right dock station that is supporting Linux for external display? Or maybe any direction that I could dig in? I have a feeling that USB-A Dell dock should support it through display-link driver, but want to hear anything, maybe someone already did that. Thanks a lot again.

In the end, just replaced the Dock to one that supports DisplayLink technology (in my case it was Dell Dock D3100 UHD, but I suppose Lenovo Thinkpad Hybrid also should work) and it works for me now in Linux.
