E430 Unable to boot from USB 3.0

2012-09-15, 19:14 PM

Hello community!

I recently got a ThinkPad E430, and I love it.  I have one minor issue regarding bootability.

As a Linux user, I regularly boot from usb and cd while trying out various distributions and whatnot.  I discovered though that I cannot boot from my USB 3.0 ports.  Not only that, but my computer will not boot if I have anything plugged in to them.

I thought first that I had fudged my dd command in transferring the image, but the usb key works from the 2.0 port. So I thought maybe it was the usb key itself, but this occurs with all my usb flash drives 2.0 and 3.0.

I noticed a recent bios update a couple days ago, but I don't want to go through the trouble if it does not actually bring any benefits.  In fact looking at the changelog itt says that it only adds support for the B430.

I guess I would really just like to know if other people face this problem.  Thanks!

So are others able to boot from any of the usb 3.0 ports?

In fact, are others able to boot at all with something even *in* the usb 3.0 ports?

My POST simply freezes up until I remove any device plugged in.

side note: the only machine i have with USB 3.0 is my personal X220. it boots successfully with a 2TB WD My Passport USB 3.0 external drive plugged into any of the USB ports. fwiw.

regards.

Thanks sarbin, I appreciate the reply.  I have a friend with an x220 and he reports the same.

I guess it is not really too much of a concern (thankfully I still have the one usb 2.0).  I guess I just wanted to know if this was specific to my machine or model.  If it is my machine I would like to have it fixed before the warranty runs dry.

Anybody out there with an E430 (or E530) who can shed some light?  I guess specifically the 3254 Ivy Bridge if theres anyone out there.

I accepted the above post as the solution because all I really wanted to know is if this is machine specific.  So sorry if this did not really help anyone else.  But from the "huge" response from this community, I assume that this is not really an issue for others.
