Hello, I have very same problem with my E560 laptop. I hope you are working on the problem not only as it affects many of your products, but also for the sake of being decent to your customers. Really looking forward to see a solution.

Lenovo will release a fix for unexpected repeated key input on E460 and E560 ThinkPads via BIOS update.

It is scheduled to be released in the next two weeks. I will post again when it becomes available.

Thank you,

Any chance you could post up some more details as to what the actual cause of the problem is and if it's effecting other parts of the system?

Re: E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds

Hi,

I have the exact same problem too. My E560 keyboard will produce the numbers by pressing the arrow keys when NumLock is active which is easily reproducable in e.g. Excel. I did not notice that unti I read about it in this thread.

However, what's annoying me really is that any key won't stop repeating when I'm running any software that stresses the internal AMD graphics chip. This is mostly while playing games but could also very easily reproduced in Google Earth. Just press some arrow key a couple of seconds, let go and the globe won't stop spinning. However, if I use the HD520 graphics, the repeating problem won't occur that often. The only workaround to enable me playing games at the moment is to set the repeat rate to the lowest possible setting in the system panel.

Also, once I unplug the ac connector, the problems are gone.

As of today, there is a new BIOS version 1.16 available at lenovo support, but that didn't fix the problem for me. However there was also no mention of it in the changelog. I have this laptop for about 4 months now and I really hope they get the issue sorted out soon....Anyway im glad I found this thread so I know that I'm not the only one having this problem...

In response to customer reports that repeated key input occurs after holding a key down for 3+ seconds, including number keys, on E460 and E560 ThinkPads, Lenovo has released a solution via BIOS update.

Hi,

I just downloaded the update and installed it. After some quick tests I can say it completely fixed the issue for me. No jerky repeat rate, no repeating keys or funny input anymore! Great :)

Thanks alot for your effort!

Can someone provide me an easy way to install this update on Linux?

I've tried to create a bootable stick using unetbootin on linux and windows and I just got a UI that had a button "default" which brought me to the very same UI again..

Also the DVD I created using growisofs won't boot.

Re: E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds

Its been a while since I updated the firmware on mine. Also I just had surgery yesterday and am stuck in a bed. So I can't verify for sure cuz im going by memory and typing on my phone.

Download the bios to be used as a bootable disk. Not update utility.

NOTE: you cannot use the bootable image in a USB stick. Unetbootin and every other program will not work for installing onto USB. However, if u insist on using USB flash drive you must find the third party program which CAN properly make USB drive work for bios update. There is one that claims it but I don't use random 3rd party programs. They are dangerous.

If you choose that route you are taking a big risk. Unless you can verify the coding. But its not open source so have fun reverse engineering the program.

Best, easiest, most straight forward way is to use external USB CD drive to update bios.

I used Linux 'xfburn' to create bootable disk using a PC with a writable drive. Then stuck disk in external CD drive connected to my e460 to update my bios(firmware) to 1.13. I will be doing this to update in a couple weeks when I can leave bed.

Looks like I won't be able to sit in front of my e460 for two weeks

Remember, this is typed up on phone from memory. But I do have s great memory.

 P.s.

The gnu/Linux program 'dd' also does not work for installing the image onto the USB stick. But u can use it to burn to image to a disk.
