E480 GPU suddenly not behaving correctly.

2018-10-26, 15:06 PM

I have a ThinkPad E480 with the RX550 GPU.

It had Ubuntu 18.04 installed for a couple of months and it ran fine except a few days ago it suddenly stopped booting. It started only booting in recovery mode or with the nomodeset kernel option.

I still had Windows installed (dual boot) so used that for a few hours to see how it was and the whole system would freeze multiple times an hour. So I *carefully* updated BIOS and GPU drivers and from then on it BSODed just as regularly with the error "Thread stuck in device driver".

I reinstalled Ubuntu on the whole disk and it only booted with nomodeset or in recovery mode.

So I reinstalled Windows on the whole disk.

Lenovo Vantage says all drivers are up to date (GPU 23.20.15034.5 from Lenovo website) (BIOS 1.24) but in device manager, the GPU reports “Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)”

Windows no longer BSODs or freezes, but that may because the GPU isn't actually running.

The fans constantly run loud and my USB Ubuntu live disk requires nomodeset to boot, which it didn't use to.

What else do I need to try and test before I contact Lenovo and suggest it's hardware (GPU?) failure? Or am I wrong and it's something else altogether?

The story is quite a bit longer than shown, but I think I've included all the important information above.

The Windows Update provided drivers also result in the following status "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".

Problem persists. Fingerprint reader isn't working either...

I have the same simptoms with my Yoga 720-15. I'm gonna try this too.
