Re: E520 Missing Product Key

2014-10-19, 8:07 AM

Status
Started repair-I place update the process took about 2 hours with some updates failing in the initial run (missing .net 4.0..). I than run windows update and got 178 updates (excluding IE 10, 11) . Update process took about a hour. After restart running step of configuring updates my laptop is stuck for more than a hour in step 5 out of 5 with 32%. . I don't know what to do now thinking of shutting down the laptop and restarting in hope the update process will finish
After shutting down and restarting the configuring updates ha finished but I got the dreaded failure to configure...reverting changes error. Will let it run to see how many of the 178 updates has failed.
For now it seems the inplace updates hasn't helped with my failing windows updates

168!! updates failed. Can't install .net 4.0 so my Kaspersy anti-virus doesn't startas well as my Microsoft BT mouse.

This has been a total dissaster as my PC is unusable for more than 7 hours now.

Restored my Thinkpad from image with Acronis.  Back to square 1.

Well, you were a bit quick on the trigger there, as you could have just cleared out your Windows Update cache. That usually rectifies all problems with failing updates.

Purge Windows Update Cache–Windows 7 failing to update

I have already done that in the past, I have already run in clean boot..... nothing helped. I am sure that the repair-inplace update has purged this directory as I didn't have any update history and have been presented the all downloads from day 1 of SP1.

No, but after you performed the in-place upgrade, ran Windows Update, and it failed, you reimaged your machine instead of trying the Windows Update reset? Isn't that so?

When you restart your machine for the first time after the in-place upgrade, the first thing that Windows does is to reset/reinstall .Net 4, it is an automated process, and it takes a little time. Thus I'm a bit perplexed on why that particular install fails.

What is the exact condition of your Windows installation now? Still running the blacklisted key on your previous installation or have you managed to install your correct one?

Yes, I restored from image after 168 updates failed, twice. Downloaded and tried to install .net 4.0 which failed as well.

In the repair step I entered my Windows product key which was inside the bettery compartement and which was accepted by the system.

I don't see an option to check for or change product key in Computer>properties.

For full licencing information do this:

Open up Run, either through the start menu or by using the Win+R key combo.

Enter slmgr.vbs /dlv in the Run dialog line and enter.

That will produce a window with all licencing information, including the last 5 letter part of your Product Key, which you can verify your correct product key, as indicated on your sticker, with.

If your Windows is activated, then the problem resides with the Windows Update client, and Microsoft have a splendid tool for addressing those issues. Standard run of that FixIt most often suffices, but on occasion, you'll have to run it in aggressive mode, which basically resets all your Windows Update components.

Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update

I gor the Lenovo product key not the one on the sticker. Windows is activated and licensed.

Will run the fixit and try to run some of the failed updates (12 out of 20) I got after restoring my PC (backup was taken on Oct. 15, before Oct. 2014 Windows updates.

p.s The link to the fixit doesn't exist.

Hmm, clicking the FixIt link within Windows 8.1 works as it should.

Does this link work for you? Windows Update FixIt Direct

Yes, it does. Will the fixit delete all previous installed updates and I'll need to re-install 200 hundred updates ?

No, it will just clear out your cache / update catalog and reset the WU system and services.
