Thanks for clarifying this. Do you know which lines are affected?

Re: E540: Fan does not stop

Not the whole line, but I observed it for the Thinkpad Edge E530 (Quadcore, NVidia GT630M, see [1] for extent of the problem). For the E540 I observe the fan using three discrete levels rather than continous tuning of fan speed (avoids the siren-like sound pattern of the E530) and getting stuck in the middle speed dispite over an hour of idling and entirely cool air coming out of the vent. Sadly, it is not easily reproducible; Right after I had written my last post the problem went away, now the fan is running at constant speed again since roughly 10 hours, being a bit loud for e.g. library environments.

I can also confirm that after a moment of sleep-mode, the fan is quiet again (even turned itself off!), but it still constitutes an annoying interruption.

I wonder if there is some way to debug the fan behaviour (which I assume is bios controlled)? The problem in the E530 sounded like overly aggressive fan adjustment while the E540 behaviour could be explained by the opposite.

How can this be by design? The BIOS should be able to control the fans and it does until the BIOS bugs.

Re: E540: Fan does not stop

Hello,

I just bought an E540 in Germany and have the same problem (once the fan had spun up, it won't calm down again).

Has anybody got a solution by now?

I really like the machine, but this fan behavior is an absolut no go.

I found a solution at the Lenovo homepage. They recommend to use the Power Manager to optimize the fan speed.

But I didn't find the Power Manager on my machine and no Power Manager for Windows 8.1 - 64Bit to download. The Power Manager for Windows 7 wouldn't install.

Here ist the solution from Lenovo: http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e540/documents/ht077046?tabName=Solutions

Has anybody an E540 with Windows 8.1 and found the Power Manager and does it help, like Lenovo suggested?

Any other solutions or any hints are very much apprecheated!

BTW: tpfancontrol is NOT working.

Thanks in advance

LenU

The power manager won't help. It is by design because it happens since the e530 almost 2 years ago trough e540 e545 and others without any answer from lenovo.

Re: E540: Fan does not stop

Hey guys, the E440 I just got from the Lenovo Outlet has this same God forsaken issue.... cores are staying around 40 C and fan is continually on and never stops.

1600x900, Wireless AC, i5, 8 gb ram and 500 gb 7200 RPM + 16 gb SSD, 75 + battery...fully loaded...

I only paid $300 for this laptop, and it was new from Lenovo Outlet.

I really wanted to like this computer, cheap, powerful and "Thinkpad quality".(What a joke....)

Now I know why it was so cheap....

I do some buying for my company and I can guarantee you one thing, Lenovo will NEVER see another cent from us.

The fact that they blatantly do nothing about this problem is what makes me angry, seems they have had 2 years to deal with this and failed.

If it is a problem that cant be easily fixed then TELL US. Being kept in the dark just makes everyone burn with even more anger.

Currently im resetting the laptop to factory condition to sell on eBay, but unlike Lenovo I will alert my buyer to the possible issue. If they can handle it then fine, they've been warned. Thankfully since its fully loaded and since I only paid $300 I should at least be able to sell it for a small profit on eBay.

I could return it, but id rather not deal with Lenovo anymore.

FU Lenovo, never again. :smileymad:

Re: E540: Fan does not stop

Hello,

I talked to the Lenovo Support today.

They listened as I described the problem and told me, that the Lenovo standard solution ist:

1. checking, if the latest BIOS version is installed

2. changing the fan

3. changing the motherboard.

I told them, that I don't believe that the fan or mainboard is the problem, but the controlling of the fan.

They understood my doubts, but the Lenovo standard solution is to 1. check...

The E540 is a really nice computer with an unacceptable way to controll the fan.

Too bad. I will send the computer back to the vendor, as I don't believe that Lenovo will fix this simple (as it seems) problem.

Thanks

LenU

I have exactly the same problem. I've tried all the "fixes" (BIOS update, power manager update etc.) - nothing works. The fan just keeps pumping cool air out of the system. Please fix this lenovo! I'm already reconsidering the purchase, might even return it to dealer.

Edit: I have a Lenovo E540

Lenovo's lack of reponse is very disappointing. Obviously the problem isn't going to be fixed in either the 530 or 540 but it would be useful to know all the models the problem affects and whether the issue will be persistent in future models. It is also disappointing that industry reviews of the model haven't taken Lenovo to task over what is a basic design flaw (I was alerted to the issue by a friend when I mentioned I was thinking of getting the E545). I opted for the Dell Latitude E5440 in the end which is Dell's entry level business laptop...hopefully it has better fan control. Kind of strange that the E530/540 has this problem when most entry level consumer laptops are able to provide adequate fan control.
