ThinkVantage Power Manage is a Lenovo supplied component.

My display powers off - flickers and goes blank for a second - whenever I put the power cord in or take it out. I called support and they said they need to change the LCD display.... so my Edge is heading back to the service center....

I experimented with holding a (fairly weak) magnet in various positions next to the power button and figured out how to turn on and off the display.  I'm now going to wait until the mystical black screen appears and see if I can turn the screen back on just with the magnet.  This, I feel, will demonstrate that the magnetic switch is probably getting triggered. I just don't want to have to reinstall all my stuff.  Thanks Office Depot for selling me a returned computer as new.  (the plastic wrapping was wrinkled, and I could tell that a new seal had been placed over the box!)

I'm also going to uninstall the ThinkVantage Power Management software to see if it might be a factor.

Well, I've had several black screens, was never able to use the magnet to turn the screen back on. I also removed ThinkVantage power management, rebooted twice and had no effect.  My only thought now is a faulty cable because it seems to be triggered by movement of somekind.  If I move the screen it will comeback on.  When it goes off, It is usally when I hit a key or there is some movement involved.

Unfortunately, I'll have to return it. I like the computer...Bummer.

jimtristate,

How frequently can this be reproduced?  I ask because I'm interested in the issue - looks like we had some activity on this in July and then a blip in August, and then a couple more for Nov & Dec.   Given tens of thousands of units in the field, statistically, this may just be one of those things that can randomly occur, but it would be nice to figure it out.

If you just return of office depot, this example will be lost.

Would you consider letting our engineering team have a look at this to repair it and hopefully understand what is happening?

If you could work with us, please send me a PM with your contact info.

Thanks,

Mark

I just wanted to let folks here know that I sent my thinkpad edge 14 for service, and it has come back fixed with the display problem solved! I wonder if anyone here tried this route and what their experience was. As my display powering off behavior was consistent and re-producible, maybe it was easier to diagnose and fix. Anyway, am thrilled, because I really like the machine.

Was there ever a definitive resolution to this problem?  I have a Thinkpad Edge 0578 running Windows 7.  The screen goes black on occasion even though Windows is still running.  I have to close the laptop or hit the power button to get the screen to come back on.  I've possibly had this laptop almost  a year.

Thanks,

cj

Thinkpad Edge 13 turns out to be a complete piece of junk

2011-06-06, 21:24 PM

I'm completely disgusted with my Thinkpad Edge 13. I have bought this notebook April last year and after dying completely two times within the first months of use it's now acting up again.

This time there seems something wrong with the lid switch. During the last week when opening the lid and pressing the power button the screen sometimes starts flickering like mad. Only after closing the lid and pushing near the hinge a number of times the screen starts functioning normally. Also sometimes the screen goes blank and the notebook goes in suspension like when you close the lid. When this happens it's difficult to get the screen functioning again.

Unfortunately there was only 1 year warranty and it expired two months ago. Funny enough I have been using the notebook less than a year because the two repairs made on the notebook took over two months.

It's a disgrace Lenovo delivers notebooks with such poor build quality, no more Lenovo for me.

Re: Display Powers Off Randomly

Hi there. I think I found the solution for this problem.

First of I work for a company that sell Lenovo computers in a country that don't have a Lenovo branch in it, so warranty or returning the laptop was not an option.

This problem I think is from the sensor of the screen that detects that it's open or close. In the bottom right corner of the screen you will find a little magnet (you have to open the screen of course) that I removed at first and the problem stopped. But also the screen is always on now. So I adjust the magnet place now just about 1 cm up and until now the laptop is working probably. I'll return it to the customer and wait for any fade back.

If any one of you tries this method I will be happy to hear you to know if this is the right solution.
