Re: Display Powers Off Randomly

2011-06-21, 19:47 PM

I can indeed confirm that Alhamel 's fix is working with a slight variation though.

I removed the 4 sticky pads from the screen bezel followed by 4 little screws. The bezel pops right off, use a finger to move your way round the screen to free it completely.

Now locate the 'magnet' in the lower right hand side of the screen. I used a small screw driver to get it out of its little platic frame.

Now the important bit. Moving the magnet 1cm upwards is not possible as the screen is ~2-3mm above the magnet.

I experimented with magnet position and found that it will work best when moving the magnet 3mm to the left hand side.

In order to do this you will need to break the left hand side of the little plastic frame the magnet originally was seated. I have used a small pair of pliers to do this.

Superglue the magnet 3mm to the left of its original position or use insulation tape to fix the magnet in its place.

Verify the laptop goes into sleep mode when you close the lid and returns to normal operation when opening the lid.

Once you are happy with the magnets position pop the screen bezel back on replace the screws and stick the pads back on.

Thanks to Alhamel this laptop now works as expected. Great fix and definately some kind of production fault (maybe magnet too strong ?).

Happy fixing !

Re: Thinkpad Edge 13 turns out to be a complete piece of junk

The warranty period "stops counting"  while the product is for repair under warranty.

So those more than 2 months under repair do not count for the 1 year warranty period. Check that as you might still be covered by warranty.

Carlos

My Edge 14 -114157U goes into hibernation randomly even though I've set all power saving options (when not on battery)

to never.  I don't believe this is related to a "magnet" problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent hibernation

when on AC power?  Also have scrolling/screen sizing issues which I'll put in another forum. Like the Edge for it's functions

as I'm upgrading from Z60t which died but will swap if I can't get it stable.

Have timed when screen goes to sleep and it's after 1 minute. The scenero is I slid finger over

reader to activate, then let machine sit with no curser movement. 60 seconds later machine goes

to sleep/hibernates (don't know which) and I have to run finger over reader again to reopen it.

Assume this is a Lenovo problem and not a Win 7 Pro (64bit) issue. This is all done on AC power

and not on battery power.  How about some help from Lenovo????

Lenovo support is complete rubbish and very customer unfriendly.  I did ask Lenovo support whether or not the warranty would be extended for the period the notebook was in repair. They told me that this was/is not the case.

It seems my crappy Edge 13 has the same kind of problem.

It is not reproducible but occurs complete randomly. This evening I was struggling for over 5 minutes to get the notebook awake and running from sleep.

I will look into the magnet fix in order to see if I can fix the problem.

It's a shame Lenovo sells this kind of junk products with very limited and poor support.

All,

Have we rulled out any conflicts in Windows power management settings and the Lenovo Power manager?

If it were always after X mins it would seem to be a system timer.

Strange, this topic seems after editing by admin have disappeared from topic list?

And after posting in it it's back again?

I have made a video to demonstrate the problem, you also hear the fan spinning up and down.

On this occasion the problem started shutting down the notebook and after shutting down trying to start it again it displayed the behavior in the video.

I did some more investigation and there seems something wrong with the magnet switch in the base of the notebook.

I can reproduce and solve the problem using a little magnet.

1) Cover is open and notebook is running normal

2) Put little magnet on base near power button --> screen turns off

3) Remove little magnet

4) Put little magnet near power button

5) Remove little magnet --> screen starts to flicker

6) Put little magnet with opposite (repelling) side near power button --> screen stops flickering and notebook resumes normal operation
