Re: Thinkpad Edge 13 turns out to be a complete piece of junk

2011-08-22, 15:19 PM

I think I finally resolved my issue with this problem.  I was having this problem when my hand moved ever so lightly near the upper right side if the keyboard, the screen would power off and then if i jiggled or pressed one of the keys near the upper right corner(specifically the backspace and "=+" keys) the displayt would turn back on. This problem cropped up again and it had been 7-8 months since I last tried to fix it by taking the keyboard and several other parts out  and jiggling them(which seemed to fix the problem for about 7 months). This time I took just the keyboard out and realized that the screen would power off if I pressed on the front of the keyboard a certain way and pressed the backspace key.  I experimented with the keyboard  (on battery power) and was able to reproduce this at will.  I ended up taping a thin (2mm thick) spacer under the area where the "P" key and bracket keys are.  After that I can not reproduce the problem, the screen will power off when it's supposed to, and it has not gone randomly blank a single time since.

It is very easy to remove the keyboard, I wish had figured this out sooner.

Re: Thinkpad Edge 13 turns out to be a complete piece of junk

2011-11-02, 6:02 AM

I have the same problem.

Last week, the monitor of my ThinkPad Edge laptop began to flicker and then shut off.  The computer stays on but the monitor turns off and remains off/will not turn back on.  I have to power off the laptop manually and can sometimes restart the computer with the monitor working and other times not.  It seems to be an issue with a loose/semi-fried wire and/or an overheating issue, but I really have no idea.  I spoke with tech support and they could not figure it out other than saying that perhaps the system board/video card needs to be replaced.

It seems to be really random when the monitor will turn off.  If I am playing music when it happens, the music stops.  I tried hooking up an external monitor, however, it as well stops working when the laptop monitor randomly shuts off.

Occasionally I also will get a pixelated screen/bar/flickers before the monitor turns off.

Betreff: Edge 14: Display Powers Off Randomly

2011-12-07, 18:25 PM

I just encountered this problem in an edge 14.  The display would power off when pressing a key in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard, most often enter or backslash.  Placing a magnet near the power button and removing the magnet caused the display to resume normal function.

This is a problem with the magnetic sensor as speculated.

Betreff: Edge 14: Display Powers Off Randomly

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have yet to find a solution for this.  All lid related power settings in windows are set to disabled or do nothing and still this persists.  There is nothign in the BIOS that would help here.  Is there any way to disable the magnetic lid sensor?

Re: Display Powers Off Randomly

I have removed the palm rest and keyboard.

I noticed that when I put pressure on the video plug of my E40 the display comes back on.

There is a small black pad under the palm rest to apply pressure to this area (located about 1 inch below the "windows" key) but there is no screw in the area to keep the pressure constant.

The only screws are around the perimeter of the palm rest and this seems to allow the plug to flex out of position causing the video to disappear.

Anybody have a similar finding??

And anybody have a good answer???:smileysad:

roadstarrick: I think this is a different problem than the one I've described. Your issue sounds related to the display connector, while I've narrowed this down to the magentic lid switch.3

I had this similar problem several months ago.  It was solved by removing the keyboard, placing some thick (maybe 5 layers)  black electrical tape on top of the insides of the computer under the area of the keyboard where the p key would be when the keyboard is in place.  This completely solved the problem.

UPDATE:

It appears the heatsink screws at the video chip are too tight. When I loosen those the display lights up without any help.

If that can assist you then great!

jimtristate: your fix works perfectly.  I've snapped a pic of the fix as described by you and performed by me:  http://imgur.com/SEPSb

I can no longer cause the display to dim by pressing the keyboard.  Kudos!
