Edge wont boot with SD card in slot (probably needs a BIOS fix)

2010-08-04, 2:45 AM

Just FYI, My Edge 15" (and probably yours too) will not boot up or restart if you happen to leave an SD card in the card reader slot.  I thought I had a serious problem until I realized I had left my SD card in the slot.

This probably needs a BIOS fix in my opinion.  I cannot find any way to set the BIOS to boot from an SD card if I wanted to, so the card slot should probably just be disabled during the bootup sequence. .. Or better yet, the card slot should be recognized by the BIOS so that you could put it in whatever boot sequence order you wanted or eliminate it yourself from the boot sequence. ... but the current status seems silly to allow an SD card to completely disable the bootup.

I've seen a couple of reasonable and logical requests for stuff that probably should have been put in the Edge BIOS ages ago in testing.  None of those requests get reviewed, and I'm sure this one wont either.

So there ya have it.  Don't forget to remove your SD card!

Hey there, TEMPEST,

thanks for your post. I also was wondering why my Edge 15 kept hanging with a blinking cursor at boot.

I also forgot my SD-Card in the slot.

But, really, this shouldn't stop the system from booting up. Lenovo should consider fixing this in a BIOS update.

Is there any comment from the staff? Anyone?

Blinking cursor means that the SD card was bootable but missing one of the boot loader files. You get the same result with a similarly formatted floppy diskette...

To remove the SD card slot from the boot sequence, you will need to remove "+USB HDD" from the boot sequence in the Bios. ... That will allow you to boot up with a non bootable SD card in the slot, but I guess means you cannot boot from a USB hard drive anymore.
