Freezes all time on Windows 7 and Linux

2010-05-24, 16:45 PM

Hi,

i got a new AMD Based Thinkpad Edge (0197-2LG Version). I installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu witch worked fine. I also Updated the BIOS to 1.16. right after the install. But i get Freezes on the System all time like 10min after start and then on regular basis. In Windows 7 the System locks for about 10secs and then resumes normal. On Ubuntu the System locks completly. I tryed updating the Bios to 1.17 today but the Problem is the same. I deleted the old Bios by mistake so I cant try out if it happens with 1.08 also. Can i download the old BIOS somewhere? I cant find it. Also if it doesnt work with 1.08 I need some futher help. I really cant work this way :smileysad:

thx,

TeHaR

Hello,

I have the exact same problem. When I run Windows 7, I get occasionally short system freezes for a few seconds, where nothing reacts. In Linux the system suddenly freezes completely and leaves me with a black screen and no information at all in any log. It's hard to trace it back, because the freezes happen so randomly and really no syslog will leave any clue. In Ubuntu the freezes occur more often in the first 10 minutes, but I also had some freezes after few hours of use.

The temperature is ok, so it shouldn't be a overheating problem. I use the newest BIOS, but nothing improved.

@TeHaR: Do you also have wlan-connection issues in linux AND windows?

I get similar freezes with Win 7 Pro 64 bit on my Edge 15.  Usually about 2 seconds where the cursor just stops then its OK.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern.

Do you guys also have an instable wlan connection from time to time? Because I think, that the freezes are related to the wireless. It seems to me as if there was a loose connection at the wlan adapter or the antenna. That would explain the systemfreezes in linux, the instable connection in windows and those mini freezes in windows.

Is there any information about whether I can check the wlan adapter myself or do I have to send it in, to have it checked?

I am experiencing the same problem....It worked fine for me first 3 months, but now after I had got my hard disk replaced (for disc read error) and had a clean install i am experiencing random freezes.

Absolutely no pattern of freezing....It freezed while browsing, watching movie and also when just left alone....

Can anyone help me....or do i have to goback to the service centre as all this is happening just after i got my hard disk replaced?

Thinkpad Edge 14 - 057865u - i3-330m, 320gb 7200 rpm, win 7 pro 64 bit

I did a clean install and even after doing that, its freezing randomly and when the computer is left alone for sometime instead of going to sleep mode it freezes.

I have a feeling that this is because of the bios update(new 1.17 version) that i have done or because of a faulty hard drive (i just got my hard drive replaced)....Have any of you got this problem after the bios update...?

Is there a way to install back the factory version of the bios, so that i can be sure that it is some hardware problem and most likely with my replaced hard disk?

Hello,

I have a recently purchased Edge 13 (core i3 model) and have had the same problem on a fresh install. Running windows 7 x64. No errors in the windows system log, so hard to troubleshoot.

However, it seems that switching the wireless adapter to no power save at all in the Windows power profile settings solved the problem.

Not sure, but for now I have had no hangs for a day. Before it would hang for a minute every ten minutes. So it might be worth a try. (Advanced power settings -> wireless adapter -> set both to "Maximum Performance").

I wonder, if some of you are actually referring to a black screen.  There is a problem with the LCD lid switch which causes the screen to shut off. Pushing the power button will bring it back on. (hitting it will also)
